Description
Ayu Tateishi is a central character in the romantic comedy series Ultra Maniac, serving as the normal human counterpart to her magical friend. She is introduced as a popular and talented eighth-grade student who is a member of the school's girls' tennis club, where she is considered the best player. Her everyday life takes an unexpected turn when she befriends a new transfer student, Nina Sakura, who turns out to be a young witch from a magical kingdom.

On the surface, Ayu is perceived by her peers as the epitome of coolness and composure. She is calm, level-headed, classy, and seems to handle every situation with grace, a reputation that has made her one of the most admired girls in school. However, this polished exterior is largely a deliberate performance. The motivation for maintaining this perfect image stems from a past encounter with her crush, a popular boy named Tetsushi Kaji. When they first met, he mentioned that he admired her calm and collected nature, and Ayu has since strived to embody that ideal to win his affection. In reality, she can be prone to worry and is often thrown into chaos by the magical mishaps that occur around her friend Nina, showing a more genuine and less perfect side of her personality.

Ayu's primary role in the story is that of the grounded protagonist who is dragged into a world of magic against her initial disbelief. Despite not believing in magic at first, she becomes the sole confidant of Nina's secret and is frequently caught up in the witch's well-intentioned but disastrous spells, which are meant to help Ayu with her romantic and personal troubles. These magical interventions often backfire, leading to comedic situations that challenge Ayu's carefully maintained composure.

Her key relationships drive much of the narrative. The most significant is her friendship with Nina Sakura. Despite the constant trouble caused by Nina's inept magic, the two become inseparable best friends, often seen walking home from school together. Their bond is strong, though it is occasionally tested, such as when a misunderstanding about Kaji's character leads to a temporary falling out. Another pivotal relationship is with Tetsushi Kaji, her long-time crush. The dynamic between them is based on mutual admiration and misunderstanding, as Kaji is also putting on a calm and kind facade because Ayu once told him she liked that in him. Their mutual pretense is a central romantic thread that eventually resolves when they are forced to confess their true feelings.

Throughout the series, Ayu undergoes notable development as she breaks out of the rigid shell she has built for herself. Her friendship with Nina, with all its chaotic and magical adventures, forces her to let her guard down and show her more vulnerable, awkward, and authentic self. She learns to be less concerned with maintaining an image of perfection and more open about her true feelings. In terms of abilities, Ayu has no magical powers of her own; her notable skill is her athletic talent, particularly in tennis, where she excels as the top player in the girls' club. Her strength lies in her grounded, sensible nature, which often serves as a counterbalance to Nina's magical exuberance.
