OVA
Description
Charle, also known as Carla or by other variations of her name, is an Exceed, a race of small, cat-like beings with the ability to fly. She was originally from the parallel world of Edolas but was sent to Earthland as an egg by her mother, Queen Shagotte. Her egg was discovered and hatched by the young Dragon Slayer Wendy Marvell within the Cait Shelter guild, which forged their lifelong and inseparable partnership. After the dissolution of Cait Shelter, Charle followed Wendy in joining the Fairy Tail guild. During the year that Fairy Tail was temporarily disbanded, Charle and Wendy were members of Lamia Scale, though Charle later assisted in the effort to rebuild Fairy Tail.
In her natural form, Charle has a small stature with white fur, pink inner ears, brown eyes, and two whiskers on each cheek. She often wears a pink bow on her tail, and her outfits frequently include a mustard-yellow and red top with a pink bow tie, along with a pink skirt, though her attire can vary. She can use her Aera magic to sprout angel-like wings for flight. Later in the series, after a year of training, she learns transformation magic that allows her to take on a humanoid teenage form. In this form, she has shoulder-length white hair, retains her cat ears and tail with its signature ribbon, and experiences a boost in her magical power and precognitive abilities.
Charle's personality stands in stark contrast to that of the more carefree Exceed, Happy. She is characterized by her seriousness, strictness, and emotional reserve, often suppressing her feelings and appearing aloof or haughty. This stern exterior functions as a defense mechanism, masking her deep-seated anxieties, particularly concerning the troubling visions of the future she experiences. Her primary drive is a powerful, almost maternal instinct to protect Wendy, acting as her guardian, advisor, and the voice of reason who constantly pushes the shy Wendy to overcome her timidity. Initially dismissive of others outside of Wendy, she was particularly cold to Happy, frequently rejecting his advances and gifts. However, witnessing his bravery and dedication during the Edolas arc caused her demeanor to soften, leading to a relationship built on mutual respect, trust, and hidden affection.
The central conflict of Charle's background is tied to her heritage. As the daughter of Queen Shagotte, she inherited the power of precognition, which allows her to see fragments of future events. For a long time, she misinterpreted these visions, believing them to be memories of a false mission in which Exceeds were sent to Earthland to kill Dragon Slayers. This caused her tremendous psychological pain, as she struggled with the idea that she was destined to harm Wendy, the person she swore to protect. During the Edolas arc, she learned the truth: her mother sent the eggs of the unborn Exceeds to Earthland to save them from the destruction of their kingdom, Extalia. The "mission" was a fabrication to prevent panic, and Charle was never meant to be an assassin. Confronted with her predetermined fate, Charle defiantly rejected it, choosing to forge her own path and protect her homeland and friends. Her queen mother, Shagotte, did not reveal their familial bond to Charle before they parted ways.
As an Exceed, Charle's primary magical ability is Aera, which grants her and those she carries the power of flight. She can carry at least one person and has techniques like Max Speed for accelerated flight. She also has physical attacks such as Scratch, and in her humanoid form, she gains hand-to-hand combat skills like the White Moon dropkick. Her most unique and significant power is her inherited precognition, which allows her to foresee future events. This ability becomes more potent and easier to control after she learns to transform, making her one of the only Exceeds with this power. Charle uses these visions strategically to help her team avoid danger and plan their actions in battle. Her combat experience includes numerous guild conflicts, such as battles against the Oración Seis, the dark guild Tartaros, the Alvarez Empire, and foes during the 100 Years Quest.
