Description
Iris, known as the Queen of Light, is a central character of Shironeko Project: Zero Chronicle. She rules the White Kingdom, a realm that floats in the heavens, and she stands as the counterpart to the King of Darkness, who governs the desolate lands below. She is also sometimes referred to as the White Shrine Maiden. Iris is a young woman with long blue hair and blue eyes, and she carries herself with the quiet authority expected of her position.

Before ascending to the throne, Iris trained alongside her close companion Sima, and she looks back on that time as the period in which she learned to bear the loneliness that comes with rule. As queen, she carries the heavy responsibility of preserving the balance between light and darkness, a duty that weighs on her more and more as conflict grows. The world of the story is framed by an old legend about a noble white cat who sat upon the throne of a beautiful kingdom floating in the sky and a black cat covered in mud who fell in love with her, a tale presented as the origin of everything that follows, and Iris’s own journey mirrors that bond between the realms of light and dark.

Iris is kindhearted and compassionate, with a genuine care for the people she protects. She is not distant or haughty despite her rank; she is willing to stand up to her own subjects when necessary and to risk herself to shield others from harm. Her deepest wish is for a peaceful coexistence between the White Kingdom and the Black Kingdom. Rather than simple hostility toward the dark realm, she hopes to unite the two sides, and she attempts to establish a commerce treaty as a means of binding them together in peace. At the same time, she is fully aware that the current King of Darkness threatens that balance through his ambition, and she regards resisting him as her duty.

Iris is one of the two main protagonists of the series, alongside the Prince of Darkness. When a destructive being named Bal appears and endangers both light and dark alike, the Black Kingdom sends envoys to propose an alliance. Iris initially hesitates, as trust between the two realms is fragile, but she gradually agrees to cooperate with the Prince of Darkness. Their early meetings are formal and cautious, but over time they develop mutual respect and a personal bond, culminating in a promise exchanged between them that becomes central to the story. As the conflict with the Dark King intensifies, repeated battles leave Iris exhausted and drained of her power. Her knight commander Faios, together with the elf chief Alantia, sets out to find the Shining Droplet in order to restore her. Once she recovers her strength, Iris uses the Rune of the Founder to empower the warriors of the White Kingdom and leads them into battle against the Dark King’s army. When the Dark King’s power ultimately surpasses hers and the White Kingdom is engulfed by darkness, she is forced to make a final and decisive choice.

Her relationship with the Prince of Darkness is the emotional heart of her story. Initially guarded in his presence, she gradually opens up, and in a lighter moment she even proposes that the warriors of both kingdoms gather mountain vegetables together, with her practical knowledge of plants earning his admiration. Her bond with Sima, who trained beside her before she became queen, remains one of the most significant of her life. Faios serves as her loyal knight commander and goes to great lengths to save her when she weakens. In opposition to her stands the Dark King, whose overwhelming might eventually exceeds her own and threatens to destroy everything she protects.

As the Queen of Light, Iris commands the Rune of the Founder, described as the root of all runes, and she is able to wield it to its fullest extent. Through this power, she can strengthen the people of her kingdom so that they can stand against far stronger foes. She can also manifest wings of light from her back, allowing her to fly. Her abilities are fundamentally tied to light, and her role as ruler is closely connected to her power over the runes that shape the world. Across the series, she develops from a ruler burdened by duty and isolation into a leader who is willing to trust someone from the opposing realm, and her promise to the Prince of Darkness reflects her growth into a figure who believes that the bonds between light and dark can decide the fate of the world.
