Description
Iron Maiden Jeanne is a significant character from the world of Shaman King, recognized as the powerful and charismatic leader of the X-Laws. A young girl from France who is around eleven years old, she presents a striking and somewhat paradoxical image. She has long, pale silver hair, red eyes, and an outwardly fragile appearance, but she is one of the most formidable shamans in the series, possessing an immense amount of spiritual power known as furyoku.

Her background is rooted in a self-imposed martyrdom that she believes is necessary for the salvation of the world. When she was ten years old, Jeanne received a divine revelation while praying in a Catholic church, which told her that an evil force threatened to destroy the world. She identified this force as the powerful and ancient shaman Hao Asakura. To gain the strength needed to stop him, she chose to live within an iron maiden, a spiked torture device. She remains inside this device most of the time, enduring constant pain to keep herself in a near-death state, which is a method for rapidly increasing her furyoku. Her title, "Iron Maiden," comes directly from this gruesome practice. She views her suffering as a form of prayer and a necessary sacrifice to bring justice to the world.

Jeanne's personality is a complex blend of purity and uncompromising zeal. Her heart is genuinely noble and pious, and she is soft-spoken and compassionate toward her followers, the X-Laws. However, because she has spent most of her childhood isolated from normal society, she knows very little about the outside world and has become detached from the complexities of human life. She sees the world in stark terms of good versus evil, with Hao Asakura as the ultimate embodiment of evil. This black-and-white worldview leads her to believe that any action taken to defeat him is justified. She kills opponents who stand in her way without hesitation, believing she is purging sin, yet she takes no pleasure in it and often feels sorrow for what she sees as a "necessary sacrifice". In this way, she is a well-intentioned extremist, motivated by a sincere desire for world peace but willing to use ruthless methods to achieve it. Her charisma is undeniable; she speaks with a noble and inspiring tone that leads others, such as the young shaman Lyserg Diethel, to join her cause.

In the story, Jeanne serves as a major antagonist and a rival to the protagonist, Yoh Asakura. As the leader of the X-Laws, she commands a group of shamans who have each been granted an Archangel spirit and are utterly devoted to her mission of destroying Hao. Her right-hand man and the de facto leader of the X-Laws in the field is Marco, who protects the key to her iron maiden and carries out her will. A key relationship develops with Lyserg Diethel, who joins the group seeking power for revenge; Jeanne shows him particular compassion and defends him against the harshness of other members. Her most important relationship, however, develops after the main events of the Shaman Fight. In a surprising turn of events, she eventually marries her former rival, the Chinese shaman Tao Ren, and takes his surname, becoming known as Tao Jeanne. Together they have a son named Tao Men.

Jeanne undergoes notable development throughout the narrative. Her rigid ideology is challenged as she witnesses the deaths of her comrades and experiences the pain of loss firsthand. She eventually abandons her belief that killing is an acceptable tool for justice, adopting a strict new principle that no one should ever be killed. Her ultimate goal is to open the "Gate of Babylon," a powerful prison she believes can seal away Hao forever. To this end, she wields her spirit ally, Shamash. Shamash is a god-class spirit, a Babylonian deity of justice, and is the source of her formidable powers. He appears as a strange, small creature but possesses immense power.

Jeanne's notable abilities are all channeled through Shamash. Her primary medium is the iron maiden itself, which she uses to create a powerful armored oversoul. This armored form gives her a mechanical, purplish battle outfit that includes a helmet, a locked belt, and spiked sandals for self-flagellation. With Shamash, she can manifest a variety of torture devices to judge her opponents. These creations include spiked interrogation chairs, a guillotine, a crushing statue, and a cage known as the Gibbet to trap enemies. Beyond her offensive power, she also possesses incredible healing abilities. Shamash can heal her own injuries almost instantly and even resurrect the recently deceased by giving them a kiss, a method she compares to the story of Sleeping Beauty. While her furyoku starts at a staggering 500,000, making her one of the most powerful human shamans, she loses all her powers after Shamash is devoured by Hao's Spirit of Fire during a critical battle in the manga. Despite this loss, her influence on the story and her journey from a holy, ruthless warrior to a more peaceful individual remain central to her character arc.
