Description
Apis Mellitus is a character from the television series Kamen Rider Agito, appearing as a monster antagonist known as an Unknown or, more specifically, a Bee-Lord. Her name is derived from Apis mellifera, the scientific name for the western honey bee. She is a female-type creature whose design combines insectoid and human elements, featuring the head of a honey bee with the lower half of a pale-skinned human woman's face. Her height is recorded as 203 centimeters, and she weighs 143 kilograms.
As a Bee-Lord, Apis Mellitus serves under the dark deity known as the Lord of Darkness. Her personality is portrayed as cold and cruel, with a particular method of eliminating her targets. She possesses the unique ability to fuse living human beings with inorganic materials, such as concrete, effectively entombing and killing them within walls or other structures. This power is used to dispatch several victims during her appearances, including a band member and a university student.
In combat, Apis Mellitus is agile and capable of flight. She wields a rapier named the Purgatorial Needle. Another of her notable abilities is leaping to great heights, up to sixty meters, by spreading the feathers on the back of her head. Her role in the story is primarily as an adversary for the protagonist, Kamen Rider Agito, and other allied warriors.
Her primary narrative function unfolds across two episodes. She first appears alongside another Bee-Lord, Apis Wespa. After Agito defeats Apis Wespa, Apis Mellitus attacks him in retaliation. During this initial confrontation, Agito uses his Flame Form's weapon, the Flame Saber, to sever one of her antennae. This injury has a significant consequence, as her antennae were the organs used to detect humans with psychic potential, her intended prey. With this sensory organ lost, her ability to discriminate between targets becomes impaired, leading her to attack ordinary humans indiscriminately.
This loss of control defines her subsequent actions. She is momentarily driven away by Toru Hojo using the V1 system battlesuit. Later, she resumes her attacks in Ota Ward, where she once again confronts Agito. The fight is interrupted by the arrival of the G3-X armored suit, piloted by Makoto Hikawa. Using her agility and flight, Apis Mellitus manages to evade the gunfire from the G3-X's GX-05 Cerberus weapon, successfully forcing it to run out of ammunition. However, the G3-X operator quickly reloads, and as Apis Mellitus lunges at the suit, she is caught in a hail of gunfire and shot down, exploding in mid-air. Her death marks the end of her brief but destructive appearance in the series.
