Description
High Priest Baraom is a major antagonist from the 1987 tokusatsu series Kamen Rider BLACK, serving as one of the three High Priests of the malevolent secret society known as Gorgom. As the so-called Battle High Priest, his primary responsibility within the organization is the deployment and management of the Gorgom Mutants, the monster soldiers sent to eliminate the series protagonist, Kotaro Minami.
Physically, Baraom is an imposing figure, characterized by his tall stature, a face that resembles a stone-like green mask, and distinct mechanical arms. In his initial form as a High Priest, he possesses incredible raw strength and can discharge powerful shockwave lasers, referred to as shock light waves, from his fingertips. These beams are capable of causing significant damage to his enemies. He also has the ability to emit searchlights from his eyes to track foes in darkness. Baraom's personality is marked by a short temper and aggressive impatience, often contrasting with the more calculating demeanor of his fellow priest, Darom. Despite his fiery nature, he possesses a strong sense of camaraderie and loyalty to his comrades, particularly his fellow High Priest, Bishum, whose death at the hands of Kamen Rider BLACK fuels a deep and personal vendetta.
Baraom's role in the story evolves significantly following the resurrection of Shadow Moon. To facilitate this event, Baraom exhausts the power of the Stone of Ocean within him, which results in the loss of his High Priest form. He reverts to his original, true form, becoming the Grand Mutant Baraom. In this state, he transforms into a black-haired, saber-toothed tiger-like creature, often depicted with large, elephantine tusks. While his stature and weight remain the same, his power increases, and his laser abilities are upgraded to more destructive, two-colored beams. In this form, he wields his tusks as weapons, using them as dual sabers or projectiles, and fights with sharp claws.
Driven by a desire for revenge against Kamen Rider BLACK, Baraom undergoes intense training to gain new abilities, most notably a super-speed movement technique that allows him to overwhelm the Rider in combat. His final plan involves enlisting the Whale Mutant to help him corner and destroy his enemy. However, his scheme backfires when he attempts to eliminate the Whale Mutant as well, leading to the Mutant turning against him. Baraom is ultimately defeated by Kamen Rider BLACK's signature Rider Punch and Rider Kick. In his dying moments, he does not express fear or regret for his own demise but instead issues a final, defiant warning, shouting that Shadow Moon will finish what he started. This final act underscores his deep-seated loyalty to Gorgom and its ultimate leader, a key relationship that defines his character until the very end.
