Description
Arumajirongu is an armadillo-themed monster from the original 1971 Kamen Rider television series. It was created by the secret terrorist organization Shocker, specifically developed by its Brazilian branch before being sent to Japan to work under the command of the high-ranking agent Colonel Zol. As a creation of Shocker, its fundamental purpose was to serve the organization's goals of world domination by eliminating its primary obstacle, the Kamen Riders.
In terms of personality and motivation, Arumajirongu, like most Shocker monsters, primarily functions as a loyal weapon for its creators. Its actions are driven by the mission assigned to it: to destroy Kamen Rider #2. While the monster does not display a complex individual personality, its actions demonstrate a ruthless and aggressive nature. This is evidenced by an incident during its initial testing phase in Brazil, where it slaughtered an entire family, leaving behind a single survivor who would later seek revenge.
Arumajirongu plays a significant role as an antagonist in the early narrative of the original series, specifically pitted against Kamen Rider #2, Hayato Ichimonji. Its primary role is to act as a physical challenge for the hero, testing his strength and resilience. The monster's key relationships are with its superiors in Shocker, particularly Colonel Zol, and with its primary adversary, Kamen Rider #2. It also has a notable connection to a Brazilian woman who survived its massacre, as she pursued it to Japan to exact her revenge.
A defining aspect of Arumajirongu is its development as a recurring threat. It is not destroyed in its first encounter. After being defeated, it was later resurrected to participate in a plot to kidnap children for testing poisonous gas. It was destroyed again, only to return once more in a later episode to assist in a plan to capture and brainwash Kamen Rider #1. This pattern of repeated resurrections and defeats highlights the persistent nature of Shocker's forces and the ongoing struggle against the Riders.
Arumajirongu possesses several notable abilities derived from its armadillo biology. Its most prominent power is the ability to curl its armored body into a tight ball and roll at high speed, using this momentum to crash into foes with explosive force. Its body is covered in extremely durable armor that makes it nearly impervious to standard attacks. For instance, it was able to withstand the full force of Kamen Rider #2's signature Rider Kick without sustaining damage. However, this defense has a critical weakness: the armor on its belly is significantly softer and less protected than the rest of its body. This vulnerability was ultimately exploited by the Kamen Riders, who destroyed Arumajirongu by targeting its unarmored underside with their finishing moves.
