Description
Nail Saionji is a young boy who serves as the overseer of Goha Duels in the anime Yu-Gi-Oh! Sevens. He is the main antagonist of the Maximum arc, first appearing when the protagonist Yuga Ohdo and his friends visit the Garden of Providence. Nail is a frail child with dull blonde hair, pink eyes, and white-rimmed ovular spectacles. He dresses simply in a white shirt, plain pants, and shoes. His polite and analytical demeanor masks a strong belief in the concept of setsuri, or providence.
Nail possesses exceptionally high intelligence, having demonstrated advanced hacking skills from an early age. He does not attend a regular school due to his abilities and instead operates from the Garden of Providence, a controlled space where he can transport people as he wishes, even dropping Duelists who fail him through trapdoors. His primary motivation is to erase Rush Dueling, which he views as chaotic. To that end, he steals the data of the robot Kaizo and uses the Duel ID cards of the Tops of the Hexagon to create Maximum Summoning, a new and powerful Dueling system. He is the first person in the series to perform a Maximum Summon.
Nail's strategic approach to Dueling reflects his analytical nature. He uses a Cyberse-type Deck built around the Tron series of monsters, which help him search for the pieces needed to summon his ace Maximum Monster, Yggdrago the Heavenly Emperor Dragon Tree. This monster, along with its left and right components, grants him multiple effects and high attack power.
His role in the story deepens as he becomes increasingly fascinated by Yuga Ohdo's unorthodox style of Dueling. Despite his initial goal of erasing Rush Duels, Nail begins to sense an undeniable pull toward Yuga, a feeling he cannot fully explain. This leads him to look forward to a decisive match with Yuga in order to understand the source of this irresistible urge. In this way, his character develops from a cold, calculating antagonist to someone motivated by a personal desire to uncover the meaning behind his own feelings.
His key relationships include his rivalry with Yuga, as well as his interactions with his loyal butler Sebastian and the elite Duelists known as the Tops of the Hexagon. Through his encounters with Yuga and his friends, Nail's rigid worldview is gradually challenged, allowing him to grow beyond his initial role as an obstacle.
