Description
In the 1973 original anime series Neo-Human Casshern, Akubon is introduced as one of three absurdly designed lieutenants serving the primary antagonist, Buraiking Boss. Alongside his fellow lieutenants Barashin and Sakagure, his role is largely that of a comedic foil, providing lighter, less menacing opposition to the hero. This portrayal presents him as a less formidable adversary, defined more by his quirky appearance and bumbling schemes than by any genuine strategic threat.

The character was significantly reimagined for the 1993 original video animation series Casshan: Robot Hunter. In this iteration, Akubon is transformed into a high-ranking and genuinely menacing commander within the mechanized army of the Black King, the equivalent of the Buraiking Boss. His personality shifts to that of a cruel and calculating strategist. He is shown to be adept at psychological warfare, spearheading operations to crush human resistance. A key example of his tactics is the capture of the freedom fighter Luna Kozuki, whom he then uses in a planned public execution intended to break the morale of the surviving human population. This scheme ultimately fails when Casshan intervenes, leading to a final confrontation where Akubon meets his end in combat.

The motivations for the robotic forces in this version are also different. Akubon is portrayed as one of the Neoroids, a faction of androids driven by a twisted ecological mandate to purge humanity in order to restore and protect the Earth's natural ecosystems. His actions are thus framed as a sense of duty to a broader, destructive environmental vision, making him a more complex and ideologically driven foe.

In terms of relationships, Akubon's primary loyalty is to the Black King, enforcing his dominion over the planet. His dynamic with Barashin is retained from the original series, but the third lieutenant, Sakagure, is replaced by a female android named Sagria. This revision alters the group dynamic, focusing on Akubon and Barashin as the central direct subordinates and key adversaries for Casshan.

The character underwent a further transformation for the 2004 live-action film, where he was portrayed by actor Hiroyuki Miyasako. In this adaptation, he leads a group of neo-sapiens, mutants created by a failed experiment involving neo-cells, in an attack on humanity. This version of the character is born from the same disastrous scientific process that creates the hero Casshern.

Across his different appearances, Akubon’s development is marked by a distinct tonal shift, moving from a comedic figure in the 1970s to a much more serious and threatening antagonist in the 1990s OVA. His notable abilities are primarily tied to his role as a military leader, commanding forces and engaging in direct combat. In the OVA, his visual design was modernized to reflect his new personality, trading his original, more absurd look for a sharper, more threatening appearance featuring needle-like teeth and a sleek visor covering his eyes. No specific details are available regarding his origins, backstory, or any roles in expanded media beyond his core portrayals.
