Description
Midori Azuma is the wife of the brilliant scientist Koutarou Azuma and the mother of Tetsuya Azuma. Before the events of the story, she lived a normal life as part of a family dedicated to science and the betterment of humanity. Her background is defined by her deep care for her husband and son, and by the tragic circumstances that befall her when the robot uprising occurs. After being captured by the Android Army under the command of the fearsome Braiking Boss, Midori’s consciousness is forcibly transferred into Swanee, a swan-type robot that was originally owned by the Azuma family. This transformation strips her of her human body but preserves her mind and emotions within a mechanical form.

Midori’s personality is marked by resilience, compassion, and unwavering maternal devotion. Even after losing her human body and facing the horrors of a world dominated by hostile robots, she does not give in to despair. Instead, she channels her love for her son into a determined drive to support him. She carries a gentle and nurturing demeanor, often acting as a source of emotional strength for Tetsuya, who has sacrificed his own humanity to become the cyborg warrior Casshern. Her core motivation is to protect and aid her son in his mission to fight against the robot army and restore peace to the world. She wants to see Tetsuya succeed not only for the sake of humanity but also so that he might find some measure of peace in his arduous existence.

In the story, Midori plays a crucial supporting role. As Swanee, she is able to move through the world and provide assistance to Casshern in ways that a human would not be able to. She offers guidance, information, and emotional support, acting as a moral anchor for her son during his darkest moments. Her role is not that of a frontline fighter but of a steadfast presence who reminds Casshern of the humanity he fights to protect. She is a link to his past life and a symbol of the family bonds that give his struggle meaning.

Her key relationships are primarily with her son, Tetsuya, and her husband, Koutarou Azuma. The bond between Midori and Tetsuya is the emotional heart of her character. She represents everything he has lost and everything he is fighting to preserve. Her transformation into a robot adds a layer of tragedy, as even in this new form she continues to fulfill her role as a mother. Her relationship with Koutarou, the scientist whose work inadvertently led to the robot uprising, is also significant, as it ties her to the central conflict of the series.

Developmentally, Midori undergoes a shift from a passive victim of circumstance to an active supporter of her son’s mission. Her capture and transformation force her to adapt to a new existence, and she chooses to use her new form to further the cause of humanity rather than retreat into grief. She accepts her fate with grace and finds purpose in assisting Casshern, showing that her identity as a mother transcends the boundaries of her physical form.

Midori’s notable ability is not a combat skill but rather the unique circumstance of her consciousness residing within the swan-type robot Swanee. This allows her to travel, observe, and communicate in ways that a human could not, particularly in the dangerous and ruined world of the story. Her most significant ability is her emotional strength and her capacity to inspire and comfort her son, giving him the resolve to continue his fight.
