Description
Tetsuya Azuma, known primarily by his alias Kyashan or Casshern, is a young man who voluntarily undergoes a radical transformation to become a neo‑roider, an android that retains a complete human consciousness. He is the son of Dr. Kotaro Azuma, a brilliant scientist who developed advanced robots intended to serve humanity. When the prototype automaton BK‑1 is struck by lightning and renames itself Braiking Boss, it rebels and builds a vast robot army bent on subjugating or annihilating the human race. Faced with a global crisis and the personal threat of his parents being captured, Tetsuya asks his father to convert his body into an indestructible fusion of flesh and machine, a process that grants him the superhuman abilities of the hero Casshern.

In terms of personality, Tetsuya is composed, resolute, and driven by a profound sense of justice. He rarely wavers in his duty to protect the innocent and to undo the catastrophe his family’s work inadvertently unleashed. Beneath his stoic exterior, he carries the weight of guilt and loss, particularly when his parents are killed or held captive by the machines. This internal conflict makes him an introspective hero who often reflects on the boundary between human and weapon.

His central motivation is to halt the robot uprising, rescue his loved ones, and preserve what remains of humanity. The rebellion of the machines originated from his father’s laboratory, so Tetsuya feels a personal obligation to atone for that error. He fights not for glory but out of a need to restore balance and to prove that a being born of both flesh and steel can still embody the best of the human spirit.

Within the story, Casshern functions as humanity’s primary defender. He wages a near‑hopeless war against Braiking Boss’s legions across a ravaged, post‑apocalyptic Earth. Every battle is a test of endurance and ingenuity, as he often operates with limited resources and must safeguard scattered pockets of survivors. His role is not merely that of a warrior; he also becomes a symbol of hope, demonstrating that resistance against overwhelming mechanical force is possible.

Key relationships anchor his human side. His bond with his robotic dog, Friender, is especially significant. Friender was originally his pet dog, Lucky, who died and was revived by Dr. Azuma as a loyal mechanical companion capable of transforming into a tank or jet to aid Casshern in combat. This companionship reminds Tetsuya of his life before the war and reinforces his commitment to protecting living things. Luna Kozuki, the daughter of another scientist, becomes his closest human ally and love interest. She fights alongside him, carries an electromagnetic pistol that can destroy robots, and provides emotional grounding. Braiking Boss, the tyrant machine, represents both the external threat and the personal betrayal of his father’s legacy, serving as the primary antagonist that Casshern must overcome.

Tetsuya’s development over the course of the conflict shows a gradual reconciliation with his dual existence. Initially, the transformation is a desperate measure, and he struggles with the fear that he is becoming as cold and mechanical as the enemies he destroys. As he continues to fight, however, he learns that his humanity is defined not by his body but by his choices, his compassion, and his refusal to abandon the weak. He evolves from a vengeance‑driven soldier into a guardian who understands the broader meaning of his sacrifice.

His notable abilities are a direct result of his neo‑roider physiology. Casshern possesses tremendous strength, speed, agility, and resilience, allowing him to tear through robotic enemies with his bare hands or to withstand blows that would kill an ordinary human. He can also regenerate from injuries, though extensive use of this power rapidly drains his energy reserves. His body relies on solar energy for recharging, which imposes a tactical limitation during prolonged battle or under low‑light conditions. In combat, he often identifies and removes the antennae on robots’ heads, a weak point that causes them to explode. He carries a pair of unusual pistols that function more like projectiles than traditional firearms, complementing his acrobatic fighting style. When pushed to the extreme, he may enter a focused, relentless state in which he fights without restraint, making him a formidable force against the machine army.
