Description
Detective Smith is a central figure in the 1977 action film Golgo 13: Assignment Kowloon. A hard-boiled Hong Kong detective, his full name is given as Dirk Chang Smith, and he is also referred to by the nickname Smitty. His primary role in the story is to serve as both an obstacle to the master assassin Golgo 13 and a determined force for justice in the corrupt underworld of Kowloon.
Smith is defined by a deep-seated personal vendetta against Golgo 13. One year prior to the events of the film, Golgo assassinated a foreign diplomat whom Smith had been assigned to protect. This failure fuels his relentless pursuit of the assassin, transforming what would otherwise be a professional manhunt into a personal crusade. In addition to his quest for Golgo 13, Smith is also hell-bent on dismantling the drug empire of a powerful Hong Kong crime lord named Chou Lei Fang. This dual mission showcases his broader motivation to take down criminals at all levels, from street-level drug manufacturers to international hitmen. Smith's personality is that of a persistent, perhaps even obsessive, lawman. His methods are direct and forceful, reflecting a determination to achieve his goals regardless of the obstacles or jurisdictional boundaries in his way.
Throughout the story, Smith's role is that of an investigator in the classic film noir tradition. He is frequently one step behind Golgo 13, yet his investigative work proves crucial. He locates Chou's hidden drug factory after a group of children find a communicator belonging to Lin Li, an undercover officer working on his team, and he leads a raid on the facility. Despite his best efforts, Lin Li is killed during the ensuing shootout, a loss that adds to his grim determination. Smith's professional ability is further demonstrated when he successfully tracks Golgo 13 to Hong Kong and manages to arrest him. However, his triumph is short-lived, as the assassin is released after the police discover that another party was responsible for the specific murder for which he was being held.
The most significant relationship in Smith's story arc is his antagonistic connection with Golgo 13. This relationship transcends a simple cop-and-criminal dynamic due to its personal nature. Their conflict becomes the central dramatic tension of the film's second half, with Smith representing the long arm of the law against Golgo's untouchable status. Smith's relationship with his own team is also a key part of his character, as he is shown coordinating with his men on raids and investigations, and he personally mourns the death of his officer, Lin Li. Smith's development is not one of profound change but rather of escalating defiance. His failure to stop Golgo in the past and his inability to hold him on charges do not break his spirit. Instead, these setbacks harden his resolve. He is not an antagonist to Golgo in the traditional sense; rather, he is a formidable rival who represents the moral and lawful opposition to the assassin's amoral efficiency.
In terms of abilities, Smith is portrayed as a highly tenacious and capable detective. His primary skills lie in investigation and field leadership. He is shown to be a competent and aggressive operative, leading his team into dangerous situations, such as the raid on Chou Lei Fang's heavily guarded drug factory. While his physical confrontation skills are not the focus of the film, his persistence and willingness to engage in direct action are defining traits. The culmination of his development and his most notable personal act occurs at the film's conclusion, when he encounters Golgo 13 at Kai Tak Airport. Smith punches the assassin, a symbolic act of defiance and frustration, and vows to imprison him should he ever return to Hong Kong. This act cements his character as a man who refuses to be defeated, even by the world's deadliest assassin.
