Description
Dr Ryo Utsugi is a scientist who worked as a colleague of the late Dr Kisaragi. He was instrumental in helping his friend bring his daughter back to life as Honey Kisaragi, specializing in the field of nanotechnology. Following the death of Dr Kisaragi, who was attacked by the Panther Claw organization, Dr Utsugi became Honey Kisaragi’s guardian and caretaker, taking her into his home.
In terms of personality, Dr Utsugi is portrayed as a caring and loyal parental figure. He has a strong sense of duty towards his deceased friend and a deep, instinctive care for Honey. This bond is so powerful that he is able to instinctively recall her even after his memories have been stolen by Panther Claw. He is also highly aware of the dangers posed by his research. He understands the severe risks of his scientific work falling into malicious hands and is determined to keep it away from those who would misuse it.
His motivations are centered on protecting Honey and upholding the legacy of his late friend. He resists Panther Claw’s efforts to steal the remainder of his nanotechnology research, even when directly confronted and captured. His primary drive is not for power or glory, but for the safety of his knowledge and the well-being of those under his care.
Within the story, Dr Utsugi’s role is that of a mentor and the source of Honey’s powers. His scientific expertise contributed to the development of the I-System, the technology that revived Honey and granted her the abilities to transform into Cutie Honey. This same nanotechnology later becomes a target for Panther Claw, who seeks to weaponize it. Dr Utsugi is frequently targeted by the organization to obtain his remaining data. He is captured by Gold Claw, but is liberated by Cutie Honey. When he refuses to divulge information during a subsequent capture, Panther Claw’s leader, Sister Jill, has his memories stolen instead. Later, he is held for ransom, and is eventually released unharmed after Natsuko Aki offers to take his place as a prisoner.
Regarding his development, Dr Utsugi remains a consistent figure of support and resilience. Although he is not the main protagonist, his ordeal of having his memories stolen and his steadfast refusal to cooperate highlight his courage and dedication. His key relationships are with Honey Kisaragi, whom he serves as a guardian, and with the late Dr Kisaragi, whose work he helped complete and whose daughter he protects. He is also positioned as an adversary to Sister Jill and Panther Claw, who seek to exploit his life’s work.
As for notable abilities, Dr Utsugi is not a fighter. His primary skill lies in his expertise as a scientist specializing in nanotechnology. He possesses the knowledge and capability to develop complex systems, most notably the I-System. This system is the core technology responsible for reviving Honey and bestowing upon her the transformative powers that allow her to become Cutie Honey. His scientific skill is the foundation of his importance to both his allies and his enemies.
