Description
Kazushi Niida is a 15-year-old third-year student at Shiroiwa Junior High School, and he is one of the participants in the deadly program that serves as the central conflict of the story. Physically, Kazushi is described as relatively tall with broad shoulders and a well-formed build, standing at approximately 178 centimeters (5 feet 10 inches) and weighing around 71 kilograms (156 pounds). He has long, straight hair that was fashionable among soccer players at the time, but notably, he has very bad teeth which detract from his otherwise attractive appearance.
Before being forced into the program, Kazushi was a forward on the school's soccer team, a position that suited his speed and physical fitness. Despite his athletic talents, he possessed a personality marked by arrogance and a need to impress others. He often failed to put forth genuine effort in his endeavors, though he maintained above-average grades. A defining character flaw is his habit of constantly making excuses and blaming others for his own actions and shortcomings. This behavior was particularly evident in his interactions with a female classmate, Takako Chigusa. During their first year, Kazushi started a false rumor that he and Takako were in a relationship, a lie he did nothing to dispel. This action earned him her lasting contempt, as she viewed his attitude toward women as possessive and misogynistic, seeing them as property or inferior to men.
When the program begins, Kazushi is assigned a shamisen banjo as his weapon, an object he considers useless for survival. His role in the story quickly escalates when he discovers the body of a classmate, Mayumi Tendo, and the unconscious form of Yoshio Akamatsu. He abandons his shamisen to take Akamatsu's crossbow, and when the other boy regains consciousness and reacts in surprise, Kazushi fatally shoots him. From Mayumi's pack, he also acquires a pair of nunchaku.
The true depths of Kazushi's nature become most apparent in the manga adaptation, where his personality is portrayed as far more sadistic, egocentric, and twisted than in the original novel or film. Upon finding his dead classmates, he callously remarks that Akamatsu should have raped Tendo before killing her. He reasons that the brutal game is the perfect excuse to give in to his basest instincts, declaring his intention to kill, rob, and rape, and dubbing himself the cold-blooded killer Niida.
Kazushi's motivations revolve entirely around self-gratification and the release of his violent impulses. His primary role in the narrative is as an antagonist who preys on weaker classmates, most notably when he encounters Takako Chigusa. He attempts to coerce her into joining him, then propositions her for sex, arguing that she should lose her virginity before dying. When she refuses with disgust, he threatens her with the crossbow and attempts to rape her, shooting her in the leg when she tries to flee. He then takes perverse pleasure in torturing her with the nunchaku.
His key relationship is a one-sided obsession with Takako, which culminates in a prolonged and brutal fight. Despite his physical advantages and cruelty, Kazushi is ultimately outmatched by Takako's resourcefulness and determination. In the novel, she gouges out his eyes with her thumbs and crushes his testicles with the heel of her shoe before stabbing him through the mouth and throat with her ice pick. In the manga, her attack is similarly brutal, causing him to lose an eye and a testicle. Even after he pretends to surrender, he attempts a final treacherous attack, only for Takako to dodge and cause him to fall onto a set of upright arrows, impaling him through the head. In the film adaptation, the encounter ends with Takako scarring his face with an arrow before stabbing him to death in the groin and chest. His development is less about growth and more about the unveiling of a pre-existing violent and predatory nature that the lawless environment of the program allows him to express fully. His notable abilities include his speed and physical conditioning from soccer, which he employs in his attacks, though these are ultimately insufficient to save him.
