Description
Hosuke Sharaku is the protagonist of the story, a character defined by a profound and striking dual nature. He is presented as a young junior high school student, but this ordinary exterior conceals an extraordinary heritage. Sharaku is the last surviving descendant of an ancient and mysterious race known as the Three-Eyed Ones, a highly intelligent and advanced civilization responsible for many wonders of the ancient world. This heritage manifests as a third eye on his forehead, an organ that is the source of immense power and a drastically different personality.

In his daily life, Sharaku appears to be a seemingly innocent, childish, and somewhat naive boy. Because his uncontrollable and malevolent powers are considered a danger to the world around him, his third eye is kept sealed with a cross-shaped bandage. When the eye is covered, Sharaku has no memory or awareness of his true nature or his abilities. In this state, he is frequently portrayed as weak and is often bullied by his classmates for his simple and trusting demeanor. He might even be described as having a dumb or clueless personality, contrasting sharply with the genius that lies dormant within.

The defining aspect of Hosuke Sharaku occurs the moment the bandage is peeled away, revealing his third eye. When unsealed, he undergoes a complete transformation into the "Three-Eyed One," a figure also referred to as the "Evil Prince". In this awakened state, he manifests extraordinary psychic powers, including telekinesis and precognition. His intelligence becomes astronomical, allowing him to decipher ancient scriptures, understand complex technology, and devise elaborate schemes. Alongside this genius emerges a diabolical and violent personality. In this form, Sharaku becomes hostile to human civilization and may conspire to conquer the world, viewing himself as the rightful heir to the legacy of the Three-Eyed Ones. When his third eye is open, he can also summon a red, spear-like wand called the Red Condor, a powerful weapon that responds to a specific phrase in the language of his ancestors.

Sharaku's motivations are deeply tied to his identity as the last of his kind. He is driven by a need to learn about his origins, the history of the Three-Eyed race, and the fate of their advanced civilization. This often leads him to investigate mysterious ruins and ancient artifacts across the globe, from Japan to locations like Easter Island and Mexico. The awakening of his third eye is driven by a desire to use his inherited powers to revive his people's greatness, while his sealed state simply wishes for a peaceful life. The conflict is not only between Sharaku and the outside world but also within himself, as his two personalities are fundamentally opposed.

Throughout the story, he is supported by a small group of key individuals who understand or care for him. The most important is his classmate, Chiyoko Wato. Wato acts as his closest friend, protector, and moral anchor. She is a strong-willed, tomboyish girl who can stop Sharaku's rampages; she is often the only person who can successfully approach him in his awakened state and reapply the bandage to seal his third eye. He lives with his adoptive father, Dr. Kenmochi, a professor who took Sharaku in as an infant after a mysterious encounter with his biological mother. Dr. Kenmochi is the one who originally placed the bandage on Sharaku to protect humanity from his power and is aware of the danger his son represents. Another supportive figure is Higeoyaji, the mustachioed owner of a local ramen shop, who often looks after Sharaku when his father is away.

The character's development hinges on the oscillation between these two states. While his primary narrative function is as a hero who solves problems, he just as easily becomes the instigator of the very crises he must resolve. Over the course of his adventures, the conflict between his innocent and evil selves remains a constant tension, with Chiyoko Wato serving as the bridge between his two identities. His experiences exploring ruins and confronting remnants of his own civilization gradually build a clearer picture of who he is, even if he cannot remember most of these events once his third eye is sealed again. He personifies the idea that the most unassuming and even bullied individual might conceal surprising and world-altering power behind their exterior.
