Description
Flora is a powerful witch of immense age, estimated to have lived for roughly one thousand years, who resides in a mansion built within a great spirit tree. She serves as the wise and nurturing mentor to the young witch Schierke, who is her sole apprentice. Despite her frail, elderly appearance at the time of the story, Flora has lived far beyond a normal human lifespan, having effectively escaped the ordinary flow of time. Her past is deeply intertwined with the enigmatic Skull Knight, with whom she was once a comrade and close friend, suggesting they fought together in a forgotten era. Her long history also includes a period in the mystical land of Elfhelm, where she was a friend to the archmage Gedfring, but she was ultimately banished for breaking a taboo while trying to save the Skull Knight and the Lady Maiden of the Cherry Blossoms during an eclipse.
Flora's personality is defined by a profound gentleness, calm wisdom, and a warm, friendly disposition. She is exceptionally well-mannered in her speech and harbors no hatred or resentment, even towards the Holy See, whose doctrines led to the persecution of witches and forced her to retreat into seclusion. Her bond with Schierke is particularly affectionate and maternal; she would let the young girl rest her head in her lap and share afternoon tea with her, and in her final moments, she expressed regret at not being able to see Schierke's bashful smile one last time. Flora is also deeply kind and selfless, habitually helping those in need, even strangers, such as healing a village boy's sick mother long before the main events of the story unfold.
Flora's primary motivation in her later years is to use her vast knowledge of magic and the astral world to aid others, particularly those struggling against the demonic forces that plague the land. She plays a pivotal role in Guts' journey by offering him aid in exchange for his help protecting a nearby village from trolls. Her most significant contribution to Guts is creating a powerful magical seal that suppresses the constant pain and attraction of evil spirits caused by the Brand of Sacrifice on him and Casca. She also entrusts him with the dangerous Berserker Armor, which was once worn by the Skull Knight, and imbues it with a protective charm to keep Guts' ego from being completely consumed by the armor's savage power.
Flora's most notable relationships are with Schierke, whom she guides and protects; with the Skull Knight, her ancient friend and ally; and with Guts, whom she aids and for whom she foresees a difficult path. Her development is tragic but triumphant. Recognizing the threat she poses to the reborn Griffith, a troop of powerful apostles led by Grunbeld and Zodd is sent to destroy her. Knowing her death is at hand, she calmly accepts her fate, stating that she has already lived beyond her allotted time. As her spirit tree sanctuary burns, she uses the last of her powers to project her thoughts to Schierke, guiding her to the Berserker Armor, and then summons a colossal, impassable wall of flame to block the apostles, ensuring the escape of Guts and his companions. Even after her physical death, Flora's spirit endures as a guiding presence in the astral world, later appearing from within Schierke's hat in the form of a great flame to protect her former student from monstrous entities within Casca's subconscious.
Flora is an exceptionally notable character due to her immense magical abilities. She is capable of manipulating the four classical elements through the aid of elemental spirits, most spectacularly fire, which she uses to create barriers that even the powerful apostle Grunbeld cannot control. Her talents include projecting her thoughts across great distances without a magical catalyst, communing with the dead, and sealing ancient curses. She possesses extensive knowledge of God Hand, Beherits, and the nature of the astral plane, though even she admits the true nature of these higher powers remains a mystery. As the guardian of a major spirit tree, her power was considered such a significant threat to Griffith's plans that he launched an unprovoked attack specifically to eliminate her, solidifying her legacy as one of the most potent witches in the world.
