Description
Azan is an old-fashioned knight who served as the Vice-Commander of the Holy Iron Chain Knights, a military order of the Holy See. Before joining this order, he was known by the legendary nickname Bridge Knight, earned from an act of chivalry where he defended a wounded elderly man on a bridge against nearly one hundred enemy horsemen. He is a stout, muscular, and balding older man with a thick mustache, almost always seen wearing his distinctive armor and a helmet that resembles a samurai warrior's kabuto. Later, after being excommunicated, he uses this helmet to conceal his identity.

Personality is the defining trait of Azan, as he is a knight who strictly adheres to a traditional and deeply held code of honor and loyalty. This code dictates his every action, from insisting on one-on-one combat against an opponent like Guts while ordering his troops to stand down, to preventing his own men from killing a defenseless and captured enemy, stating that to do so would bring shame upon all knights. He has an utter disgust for those who exploit women and children as hostages and will prioritize the protection of the innocent over his mission. Despite his stern demeanor when it comes to duty, he is also known to have a simple and passionate heart, and after his exile, he reveals a more comedic side, bickering with younger characters and rationalizing minor indulgences like hunger. While he is a celibate member of the Holy See, he has confided that he would abandon his religious vestments for a wedding ring if given the chance.

Azan's primary motivation is the pursuit of his chivalric principles. He is driven by a sense of duty, responsibility, and the desire to act as a just and honorable warrior. After the devastating Incarnation Ceremony at the Tower of Conviction, where most of his knights were killed and he survived only by fainting and being trapped under rubble, his motivation is colored by a deep sense of shame for having failed to save his comrades. Rather than being grateful for his own survival, he is haunted by his perceived failure in leadership.

In the story of Berserk, Azan initially serves as an antagonist, tasked with hunting down Guts. He first confronts the Black Swordsman after Guts decimates a group of his less experienced men, and despite his skill, Guts manages to escape. His role transforms dramatically during the chaos at the Tower of Conviction. After his own forces are wiped out by evil spirits, he joins forces with Guts to fight against the invading Kushan army, using the distraction to lead a group of survivors, including Farnese and Serpico, to safety. When Farnese and Serpico decide to follow Guts, Azan chooses to return to the Holy See to report the catastrophic events, an act of responsibility that results in his excommunication by the clergy. He later reappears, living as a vagrant, and inadvertently ends up on the same ship as Guts's party as they journey to the mystical island of Elfhelm. He becomes a supportive companion to Guts and a member of his party, often training the young Isidro.

Azan's key relationships are defined by duty and honor. He is fiercely loyal to his commander, Farnese, acting as her experienced and level-headed mentor, though he must often compensate for her incompetence in the field. He shares a long-standing working relationship with Serpico, who easily recognizes him even when he tries to hide his identity. His relationship with Guts evolves from that of a hunter pursuing his prey to a reluctant ally, and finally to a respected comrade-in-arms. He also becomes a mentor figure to the brash young Isidro, often criticizing the boy's pragmatic and unhonorable fighting style.

Azan undergoes significant development, primarily shifting from a devout officer of a religious military order to an excommunicated wanderer who finds a new purpose. His defining moment of failure at the Tower of Conviction, where he was betrayed by the very people he tried to protect and could not save his men, shatters his previous identity. His subsequent exile forces him to abandon his formal role, but his core chivalric nature remains intact, leading him to a more personal and less institutionalized path of honor as a member of Guts's group.

In terms of abilities, Azan is a remarkably skilled and powerful warrior. He wields a staff-lance with impressive speed and precision, a trait that surprised even the incredibly fast Guts, who noted his accuracy and speed despite his age. His physical strength is considerable, as is his endurance, having survived the supernatural onslaught at the Tower of Conviction. He is also a seasoned and experienced leader, serving as the only true veteran in the Holy Iron Chain Knights.
