Description
Berthold Fubar is a fictional character from the manga and anime series Attack on Titan. He is introduced as a quiet and reserved member of the 104th Training Corps, but his true identity is that of a warrior from Marley and the holder of the Colossal Titan, one of the Nine Titans. This makes him a primary antagonist for much of the story, directly responsible for the initial breach of humanity's protective walls.

Born as an Eldian in the nation of Marley, Berthold was raised in the Liberio internment zone, a ghetto for his oppressed people. Seeking to secure a better life for his ailing father, he became a Warrior candidate for the Marleyan military. He was chosen to inherit the power of the Colossal Titan, a 60-meter-tall creature of immense destructive capability. In the year 845, he was sent on a mission to Paradis Island alongside his comrades Reiner Braun, Annie Leonhart, and Marcel Galliard. Their objective was to infiltrate the walls, find and steal the power of the Founding Titan, and thereby eliminate the "threat" of the Eldians for Marley. Following the death of Marcel, Bertholdt transformed into the Colossal Titan and breached the outer gate of Wall Maria in the Shiganshina District, an act that led to the fall of the district and the death of countless civilians, including Eren Yeager's mother.

Berthold is characterized by his subdued and self-effacing personality. He is tall and slender with short black hair and pale eyes, often noted for a perpetually nervous expression. His demeanor is that of a withdrawn individual with low self-esteem, readily admitting to a weak will and a tendency to follow the opinions of others. Instructors saw great potential in him but noted his complete lack of initiative. He typically remains in the background, appearing taciturn and emotionally detached. This exterior, however, masks a deep internal conflict. Beneath his calm surface, Berthold is plagued by guilt and remorse for the devastation he has caused, particularly towards the friends he made within the 104th Corps. He struggled to reconcile his mission as a "warrior" for Marley with the genuine camaraderie he felt with people like Eren, Armin, and Jean, making him a tragic figure forced to betray those he cared about.

His primary motivation is a desperate desire to complete his mission and return to his "hometown" in Marley, a goal he shares with Reiner. This mission is the singular focus that justifies his horrific actions in his own mind. He is deeply loyal to his fellow Warriors, particularly Reiner, with whom he shares an unbreakable bond forged through shared trauma and years of deception. He also harbors strong but unspoken romantic feelings for Annie Leonhart, which are noticed by those around him. His relationship with Reiner is central to his character; he often serves as a quiet anchor to reality for Reiner, who develops a dissociative personality to cope with his guilt. Berthold is the one who reminds Reiner that they are not soldiers, but warriors with a duty to fulfill.

As the story progresses, Berthold's role evolves from a background observer to a primary threat. After his identity is revealed alongside Reiner's, he is forced into direct confrontation with his former comrades. This culminates in the Battle of Shiganshina, where his character undergoes a significant shift. He hardens his resolve, shedding much of his hesitance to become a cold and efficient instrument of destruction, declaring his intent to kill everyone within the walls. He attempts to annihilate the Survey Corps in a massive explosion, demonstrating a ruthless determination previously unseen. In his final moments, however, after being outmaneuvered by Armin Arlert and incapacitated by Eren, this hardened facade crumbles. As he is about to be devoured by a Pure Titan (the transformed Armin), he reverts to his terrified, vulnerable self, crying out for his friends to save him before he is consumed. His death passes the power of the Colossal Titan to Armin.

As the Colossal Titan, Berthold possesses one of the most formidable abilities in the series. His Titan form stands at an unprecedented 60 meters, towering over the walls. While incredibly large and powerful, this form is slow and lacks the agility of other Titans. To compensate, it possesses unique abilities related to thermal manipulation. Upon transformation, Berthold can generate a massive, atomic-like explosion capable of leveling a city district. He can also rapidly expel superheated steam from his body, which not only burns anything nearby but also allows him to rapidly shrink his Titan form to escape or to create a defensive barrier that makes it impossible for enemies to approach him. In his human form, despite his self-doubt, he is a highly capable soldier, graduating third in his class and demonstrating excellent proficiency with vertical maneuvering equipment and marksmanship.
