Description
Kenny Ackermann, also known by his fearsome epithet Kenny the Ripper, is a central antagonist in the third season of the anime, serving as a pivotal figure in the conflict between the Survey Corps and the royal government. He is a member of the persecuted Ackermann family and is the maternal uncle of Captain Levi, a fact that remains hidden for most of the story.

Physically, Kenny is a tall and lean man, standing at 190 centimeters, which contributes to an imposing yet gaunt appearance. His sharp eyes and the rugged, cowboy-inspired aesthetic of his hat and long coat give him the look of a seasoned and deadly gunslinger. Despite his terrifying reputation, his personality is layered and complex. He is exceptionally talkative and seems to take genuine pleasure in taunting his enemies with a sharp and cynical wit. However, this jovial facade masks an incredibly cold, calculating, and ruthless interior. He operates with a professional detachment, showing no remorse for his actions, which include assassinations and betrayals carried out with chilling efficiency. His personal philosophy is deeply nihilistic; he believes that all people must be "drunk on something" to find the will to live, making them slaves to their ideals, dreams, or vices, a category he includes himself in.

Kenny's motivations are rooted in his family's history and his own search for meaning in a brutal world. The Ackermann clan was persecuted by the royal government because their lineage made them immune to the memory-altering powers of the Founding Titan, marking them as a threat. Driven by a desire to resist this oppression and understand true power, Kenny attempted to assassinate Uri Reiss, the true king of the walls who possessed the Founding Titan. After Uri defeated him, the king did not kill him. Instead, he knelt before Kenny and tearfully apologized for the suffering inflicted upon his family. This profound display of humility from a being of god-like power deeply shook Kenny, transforming his mission of revenge into one of awe and loyalty. For years afterward, Kenny served as the captain of the Central Military Police's Anti-Personnel Control Squad, acting as the Reiss family's most effective enforcer while secretly harboring a dream to one day steal the power of the Titans for himself.

Kenny's role in the story is that of a formidable antagonist and a dark mirror to his nephew, Levi. He is the leader of the squad sent to capture Eren Yeager and Historia Reiss, placing him in direct opposition to the Survey Corps. His introduction marks a significant tonal shift for the series, moving the primary conflict from man versus Titan to brutal human-on-human combat. His key relationships define his character arc. His bond with Uri Reiss is central; he respected and saw the king as a friend, but his ultimate failure was in coveting the power that made Uri so compelling. His most significant relationship is with Levi. When his sister Kuchel died, Kenny reluctantly took in her young son, Levi, raising him in the lawless underground city. He taught him everything about fighting, survival, and killing, forging the boy into the formidable soldier he would become, before abandoning him when he deemed Levi strong enough to survive on his own. Their reunion as enemies is fraught with this shared, violent history, and Kenny remains one of the few people Levi considers a genuine threat.

Kenny's development culminates in his final moments. His long-held plan to seize the Founding Titan shatters when he learns that only those with royal blood can fully utilize its power. Mortally wounded in the ensuing chaos of Rod Reiss's titan transformation, Kenny is left bleeding out under a tree, holding the very titan syringe that could save his life. In a moment of clarity, he rejects the chance to become a "slave" to that power. Instead, he reveals to Levi that he is his uncle, entrusts him with the syringe, and dies having understood that perhaps everyone, including the man he admired, was simply a slave to something greater than themselves.

As a fighter, Kenny's abilities are legendary, earning him the title of urban legend for killing over a hundred Military Police officers in his youth. He is a master of close-quarters combat, knife fighting, and stealth tactics. As the leader of the Anti-Personnel Control Squad, he wields a specially modified version of the vertical maneuvering equipment designed for fighting humans, which is armed with guns rather than blades. His combat prowess is comparable to Levi's, and his tactical intelligence allows him to outmaneuver and trap even humanity's strongest soldier, making him a uniquely dangerous adversary whose skills are honed specifically for killing people, not titans.
