TV-Series
Description
Alberto Vist is a pivotal character in Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn RE:0096, serving as an executive of the powerful Anaheim Electronics corporation and a scion of the influential Vist family. Born in UC 0063, he is 33 years old during the events of the story. As the firstborn son of Cardeas Vist, the head of the Vist Foundation, from his first marriage to Ellen Vist, Alberto is the half-brother of the protagonist, Banagher Links, a fact that profoundly shapes his personal journey.
Alberto's personality is marked by a short temper and a tendency toward impulsive, sometimes violent, behavior. This is demonstrated when he physically attacks Banagher for speaking ill of their father, Cardeas. Despite his position of authority, Alberto often comes across as anxious and easily frustrated, particularly when his plans or authority are challenged. His relationship with his father was strained from a young age, as he resented Cardeas's ends-justify-the-means philosophy, a resentment that pushed him closer to his aunt, Martha Vist Carbine. Consequently, Alberto often displays a subservient and deferential attitude toward Martha, acting largely on her behalf.
His primary motivation is to block the transaction between his father's Vist Foundation and the Neo Zeon remnant group known as the Sleeves, and to prevent the opening of Laplace's Box, a secret that could upend the Earth Federation government. Acting on orders from his aunt Martha, Alberto joins the Londo Bell task force aboard the ship Nahel Argama to achieve these goals. His role in the story is that of an antagonist and a corporate spy, constantly clashing with the ship's military command, particularly Captain Otto Midas and Commander Daguza Mackle, over issues of corporate interference versus military protocol. During the initial confrontation on the colony Industrial 7, Alberto takes advantage of a distraction to mortally wound his own father, Cardeas.
Key relationships define Alberto's actions throughout the series. His bond with his aunt Martha is one of subservience and shared interest, though he is also clearly subordinate to her will. His relationship with his half-brother Banagher is fraught with jealousy and resentment, as he views Banagher as the son who took everything from him, including their father's affection and the key to Laplace's Box. This jealousy culminates in a later confrontation where Alberto, consumed with rage, tries to shoot Banagher. His connection to the Unicorn Gundam itself is also notable, as he feels a possessive attachment to the mobile suit and sees the young Banagher as a threat to his family's control over it.
Over the course of the narrative, Alberto undergoes a degree of development, though he remains a conflicted figure. While he begins as a primary agent working to seal Laplace's Box on behalf of Martha, his desperation leads him to take gambles that ultimately fail, such as when he encourages the untrained Banagher to pilot the Unicorn Gundam against the pilot Full Frontal, only for the Gundam to be captured. Despite his antagonism, he is not a one-dimensional villain. He is shown to have knowledge of the larger political game at play and, in some interpretations, his actions are driven by a deep-seated insecurity and a desire for approval that he never received from his father. In the final acts, his schemes unravel as his own pawns, including Marida Cruz, break free from his control.
Regarding notable abilities, Alberto Vist is not a mobile suit pilot himself, but he possesses significant corporate and political authority as an Anaheim Electronics executive. His main strengths lie in his knowledge of the secret military projects, including the development of the Unicorn Gundam and its enemy counterpart, the Sinanju. He uses this technical and strategic information to advise, or attempt to command, the military forces around him. In some extended media, he is shown piloting a transformable mobile suit, the RAS-96 Anksha, but this is not a central part of his role in the main story.
