Description
Jūbee Yagyū is the central heroine of Hyakka Ryōran Samurai Girls and the first Master Samurai contracted to Muneakira Yagyū. She is a young woman with bright red hair and blue eyes in her normal state, but when she transforms into her Master Samurai form, her eyes shift to a piercing gold with dragon-like pupils. Her weapon of choice is a daishō set, a pair of matched katana and wakizashi, with the katana being unusually colored and capable of detaching into smaller blades. A notable feature of her appearance is the hairpin she wears, which is crafted from the guard of a legendary katana.
Personality is the most defining and complex aspect of Jūbei, as she exists in two dramatically different states. In her everyday form, she displays a childlike, innocent, and capricious demeanor. She is cheerful, airheaded, often clumsy, and refers to herself in the third person, all of which reinforce her youthful and naive nature. A key trait of this personality is her habit of giving people unique nicknames, rarely calling anyone by their real name, and her complete lack of shame regarding her body, especially in front of Muneakira. She also has a peculiar ability to communicate with monkeys. This normal personality is later revealed to be a failed or incomplete personality, created because her initial contract with Muneakira was formed before he had fully awakened as a General.
When she transforms into a Master Samurai, typically through a kiss with her contractor Muneakira, her personality undergoes a complete reversal. In this state, Jūbei becomes a fierce, dangerous, and sadistic warrior. Despite her cruelty, she maintains a strong sense of honor, giving respect only to those opponents she deems worthy. This duality is so pronounced that her transformed self represents the complete opposite of her childlike everyday persona.
Her background is shrouded in initial mystery, as she appears one night by falling from the sky through the roof of the Yagyū dojo while being pursued by Hanzō Hattori. She has no memories of her past life and claims to be a descendant of Muneakira Yagyū, though this is later called into question. Her primary motivation throughout the series is intrinsically linked to Muneakira Yagyū, whom she adoringly calls "big brother" (onii-chan). As his first Master Samurai, her purpose is to fight for him, and the success of her transformations is tied directly to her bond with him.
Key relationships define her role in the story. Her bond with Muneakira Yagyū is the most critical, as he is her General and eventual fiancé. Her love and feelings for him are the catalyst that allows her to fully harness her power. She also has a significant rivalry with her sister, Gisen Yagyū, who serves as a primary antagonist. Her relationship with fellow samurai Musashi Miyamoto develops into a close friendship, with the two sharing affectionate nicknames and facing challenges together. She also shares a connection with the Tokugawa shogunate and other Master Samurai like Yukimura Sanada and Sen Tokugawa.
Jūbei undergoes considerable development as the story progresses. At first, her Master Samurai transformation is incomplete, which leaves her physically and emotionally unstable and causes a conflict between her two personalities. Her power level in this initial transformed state is rated at 5,000,000. It is only when Muneakira fully awakens his General powers and she kisses him again that she fully awakens, gaining complete control over her body and power, which seemingly makes her failed normal personality disappear. However, during a climactic battle with her sister Gisen, the feelings and connections she has forged with Muneakira and her friends cause her two split personalities to merge into one, creating a hybrid personality with even greater power, reaching an estimated 7,000,000. Later, through training and learning to control her Ki correctly with the help of Maeda Keiji, she and her friends unlock even more potential, learning new techniques such as telepathy.
Notable abilities extend beyond her standard Master Samurai transformation. In her regular form, her combat ability is very low, comparable to a civilian, with a power level of only 25. However, as a Master Samurai, her physical capabilities, swordsmanship, and combat speed reach the highest levels, and she can shroud herself in a black aura for attack. She possesses a special technique known as Shadow Blink. Her ultimate forms include the Samurai Bride form, achieved during her wedding ceremony with Muneakira, which combines her power with those of her seven friends, reaching over 30 million in power and granting her a purifying aura capable of pacifying corrupted souls. She also possesses a Legendary Bride Form, attained by donning a special wedding dress, which gives her a unique power of light to counter dark corruption.
