OVA
Description
Mihoshi Kuramitsu is a Galaxy Police detective first class. She is a member of the powerful Kuramitsu family from the Seniwa empire, a family whose political influence is second only to the Jurai royal family. Her name, Mihoshi, means beautiful star and is derived from a town in Okayama Prefecture formerly known as Bisei. She is the granddaughter of Minami Kuramitsu, the Grand Marshal of the Galaxy Police, and is distantly related to the brilliant scientist Washu through her great-great-granddaughter lineage. Her mother Mitoto works as a cleaning lady for the Galaxy Police, and she has a younger brother named Misao.
Mihoshi appears cheerful, optimistic, and perpetually good‑natured. She is scatterbrained, clumsy, and often lazy, which masks her genuine intelligence and dedication to her duties. Despite her outward ditziness, she is surprisingly perceptive and sensitive to the emotions of those around her. She is deeply loyal to her friends and always willing to help, even when her attempts lead to chaos. She tends to write exhaustive, unstructured reports that take her superiors days to decipher, yet her observational skills are sharp enough to include details that become classified.
Her motivation as a police officer is sincere: she takes her job seriously and strives to uphold the law. However, a past trauma contributes to her unusual behavior. In the OVA continuity, an arranged marriage ended when the man she loved left her, breaking her heart. The Kuramitsu family revived her after a suicide attempt, and the experience left her with a near‑invulnerable constitution and an unshakably sunny disposition, but also with her characteristic incompetence and luck‑driven survival.
Her role in the story begins when she is assigned to patrol the quietest sector of the galaxy—the sanctuary sector that includes Earth. She crashes on Earth while pursuing the space pirate Ryoko and the villain Kagato. She ends up living at the Masaki household alongside Tenchi, Ryoko, Ayeka, Sasami, Washu, and later her partner Kiyone. She frequently forgets that Ryoko is a wanted criminal and treats everyone with friendliness. Her actions often cause unintended complications, such as accidentally summoning Ayeka when trying to call for backup.
Key relationships include her partnership with Kiyone Makibi, a more competent detective who is often exasperated by Mihoshi’s antics but remains a loyal friend. Mihoshi has a mild crush on Tenchi, though it is less intense than the feelings of Ryoko or Ayeka. She also shares a familial bond with Washu, who occasionally studies her unusual luck. Her protective younger brother Misao later becomes a source of conflict when he attempts to attack Tenchi, believing his sister has been manipulated.
Over the course of the series, Mihoshi does not undergo a dramatic personality change. Her development is subtle: she occasionally reveals deeper insight and emotional maturity, as seen in the Mihoshi Special where her dream narrative offers sharp commentary on her housemates’ insecurities. She remains a consistently upbeat presence, and her clumsiness is often counterbalanced by her improbable good fortune.
Notable abilities include an extreme form of luck known as causality bias, which allows her to survive impossible situations and access locations that should be unreachable. She inadvertently freed Washu from a sealed dimension by manipulating a control cube she did not understand. Her near‑invulnerability, a side effect of her revival, means she is exceptionally difficult to kill. She also possesses standard Galaxy Police equipment, including a battle suit and a blaster, though her effectiveness in using them is erratic. Despite her absent‑mindedness, she is surprisingly good at household chores—more so than Ryoko or Ayeka—and willingly helps with daily tasks.
