Description
Maika Sakuranomiya is the central character of her story, a sixteen-year-old high school girl with a serious and polite demeanor who finds herself constantly misunderstood due to her unintentionally intimidating expression. She has beautiful long black hair, which is depicted with a purple hue in color art, but its fine texture makes it highly prone to static electricity, forcing her to keep it tied up in low pigtails to keep it manageable. Standing at 156 centimeters tall, her appearance is further defined by her sharp eyes, which give her a naturally sadistic or menacing look, especially when she tries to smile in a friendly manner.
Born into a very traditional and wealthy Japanese family that resides in a large, grand Japanese-style mansion, Maika grew up surrounded by traditional clothing, food, and customs. This sheltered upbringing led her to become bored with her own culture from a young age and ignited a powerful fascination with foreign countries. At the age of five, an encounter with a foreign guest at her home sparked a deep desire to travel and eventually study abroad, a dream that motivates her to seek a part-time job. Her fascination with the outside world manifests in quirky ways, such as having a childhood crush on a Colonel Sanders statue and an enduring admiration for Santa Claus.
Despite her goodhearted, cheerful, and hardworking nature, Maika's inability to regulate her expressions leads to constant social difficulties. Her tense, nervous face and awkward manner of speaking are frequently misinterpreted as coldness or malice, causing others to feel she is mean. This problem has made it nearly impossible for her to secure a part-time job, as she fails every interview because potential employers find her frightening. In reality, she is an innocent, pure-minded, and clumsy girl who often tries too hard and ends up making mistakes. She is quick to blame herself and worries incessantly about being rude or causing trouble for others. When she is not actively trying to control her expression, she comes across as naturally sweet and nice, which makes her predicament all the more ironic.
Her life changes when she encounters Dino, the tall, blond Italian manager of Café Stile, who is a self-proclaimed masochist. Rather than being repelled by her glare, he falls in love with her appearance at first sight and recruits her to work at his café, where waitresses are required to play specific character archetypes. Her natural, unintentional cruelty makes her a perfect fit for the "sadistic" or Do-S character. At work, Maika struggles with this role, as her genuine desire to be kind to customers conflicts with the need to act dominant and cruel. She will harshly tell customers to leave and never come back, only to frantically apologize to them the moment they are out of earshot. Over time, she becomes exceptionally good at this persona, even developing a more extreme, dominatrix-like version of the character, though this is considered too intense for regular use.
Maika's key relationships center on her colleagues at Café Stile, with whom she forms strong friendships, including Kaho, Mafuyu, Miu, and Hideri. Her most significant relationship is with Dino. While she is completely oblivious to his obvious crush on her, she deeply admires him, initially for his blonde hair and foreign heritage, which aligns with her obsession with overseas cultures. As time passes, she begins to notice him as a member of the opposite sex, finding it cute and fun when her unintentionally sadistic jokes cause the much taller manager to become flustered. This marks the beginning of her romantic development, which deepens throughout the story. Her family also plays a role, particularly her older sister Aika, who is protective of her, and her older brother Kōichi.
Maika's development is marked by her growth from a socially anxious girl unable to hold a job into a confident and beloved employee who masters her assigned persona. She learns to interact with people more effectively and finds a place where her unique traits are not just accepted, but celebrated by customers who enjoy her harsh treatment. In a future epilogue set four years later, Maika achieves her lifelong dream of going abroad. She moves to Italy, marries Dino, and together they run a café, where she has adopted a new ponytail hairstyle but retains her characteristic sharp eyes. Her notable abilities include her incredible work ethic and a natural talent for her sadistic role, which she performs so convincingly that it delights the café's clientele, all without her ever intending to be genuinely mean.
