Description
Great Gozu is a character from the Danganronpa 3: The End of Hope's Peak High School: Future Arc. His true name and early life remain unknown, as he consistently presents himself through his wrestling persona. He was a student in Class 69th at Hope's Peak Academy, where he held the title of the Ultimate Wrestler. Following the Tragedy, a catastrophic world-ending event, he became a member of the Future Foundation, an organization dedicated to rebuilding society. Within the Foundation, he served as the Director of Branch Office 12, a role focused on restoring infrastructure such as roads and communications, and also acted as a personal bodyguard to the Foundation's Chairman, Kazuo Tengan.
In terms of personality, Great Gozu presents a stark contrast between his fearsome appearance and his inner nature. Standing at an imposing 210 centimeters with a muscular build and wearing a stylized bull mask, he appears intimidating. However, he possesses a gentle and polite demeanor, speaking quietly and patiently. He is deeply honorable, believing that punishment without a fair trial is a disgrace, and he dislikes needless violence. Despite his calm nature, he is known to dramatically proclaim his name, his values, and his intentions when taking a stand. He is fiercely loyal and respectful to his comrades, refusing to ever doubt them. This loyalty extends to his code of honor, as he declares he will never kill his allies, even if it costs him his own life.
Great Gozu's primary motivation in the story is to act according to his strong moral compass and protect those he believes in. He is initially present at what becomes the Final Killing Game, a deadly contest the Future Foundation leaders are forced to participate in. He becomes a key ally to Makoto Naegi, the protagonist of the series, whom he admires for his unwavering optimism and hope. Gozu views Makoto's hope as exactly what the Future Foundation needs to change for the better. He directly defies the orders of Kyosuke Munakata, the Foundation's vice-chairman, and fights against fellow directors Juzo Sakakura and Kyosuke himself to help Makoto and Aoi Asahina escape. His actions are driven by his refusal to sacrifice comrades for the sake of expediency or to give in to despair.
Within the narrative, Great Gozu plays a supporting but crucial role as a protector and moral anchor. After the Killing Game begins and a corpse is discovered, he shows respect for the dead by covering the body. When the group immediately turns on Makoto, Gozu physically intervenes, blocking a knife with his bare hand and breaking it. He then fights a rearguard action against Kyosuke, allowing Makoto, Aoi, and Miaya Gekkogahara to escape and barricade themselves in a separate room. He provides encouragement to Makoto, relaying that Chairman Tengan was happy when Makoto joined the Foundation and that things were going to change. His fate, however, is grim. As part of the Killing Game's mechanics, he is forced to view a "Suicide Video" after being put to sleep, which brainwashes him into violently taking his own life by stabbing himself in the eyes with a knife. His corpse is discovered by his allies, who honor him by covering his body, mirroring his own earlier respectful gesture.
Key relationships define his actions. He acts as a loyal bodyguard to Kazuo Tengan, who he seems to prefer taking orders from. While not extensively shown, supplementary material indicates he was good friends with fellow director Daisaku Bandai, helping him farm. His most significant relationship in the anime is with Makoto Naegi, whom he fiercely protects and encourages. This puts him in direct conflict with Kyosuke Munakata and Juzo Sakakura, whose more ruthless, ends-justify-the-means philosophy he rejects entirely.
As the Ultimate Wrestler, his abilities are formidable. He is an exceptionally skilled physical fighter, capable of holding his own against other top-tier fighters like the Ultimate Boxer Juzo Sakakura and the skilled swordsman Kyosuke Munakata. His raw strength allows him to snap a knife blade in half with only his grip and to collapse an entire floor of a building by driving his shoulder into it. His wrestling moves, including the German suplex, are his primary combat techniques. Despite his dislike for weapons, he is proficient with makeshift ones, such as using a pipe as a club.
