Description
Hayuru Himekawa is a central figure in the strategic defense academy Ataraxia, where she serves as the chairwoman of the Morals Committee and is recognized as one of Japan's most elite warriors, bearing the alias "Sword Saint". She is a member of the special unit Amaterasu, which is tasked with defending humanity from interdimensional invaders. With her long black hair styled into elegant twin-tails with red ribbons and sharp blue eyes, Hayuru cuts a striking and disciplined figure, standing at 158cm tall. Her appearance before undergoing certain power-enhancing rituals was noted to have measurements of B81-W53-H85.
Hayuru's personality is initially defined by a harsh and unyielding strictness, a direct reflection of her role on the Morals Committee. She holds a deep-seated contempt for anything she deems perverted or shameless, making her a relentless enforcer of the academy's rules. This disposition makes her impatient and easily angered, with Kizuna Hida often becoming the target of her ire due to circumstances that force them into close proximity. Her rigid adherence to propriety is challenged by the very mechanics of her world's defense system, which requires a process known as Heart Hybrid—an intimate act that restores power to her Heart Hybrid Gear. Hayuru is initially the most vehemently opposed to this method, viewing it as an unforgivable violation of her moral code and her position as a disciplinarian.
Despite her formidable reputation, Hayuru's past is marked by a significant failure that haunts her. During the Second World Collision, she was tasked with escorting evacuees. While attempting to comfort a frightened young child, a powerful Tri-Head Magitech Weapon attacked, and Hayuru was powerless to stop it, resulting in the deaths of many refugees she had sworn to protect. This traumatic event serves as a crucial motivator, forging her resolve to become stronger and instilling in her a profound sense of duty, though it also contributes to her inflexible and self-righteous attitude as she seeks to regain a sense of control and order.
Over the course of the narrative, Hayuru undergoes significant personal development. Her forced proximity and repeated need to perform Heart Hybrid with Kizuna lead to a complex evolution of her feelings. Initially developing a "tsundere" persona, she continues to verbally protest the acts as shameless even as she begins to acknowledge their necessity and, eventually, her own enjoyment of them. As her animosity towards Kizuna fades and is replaced by genuine affection, her personality mellows considerably. She becomes less hypocritical, recognizing that it is unfair for her to punish others for lewd conduct when she engages in the same, and instead offers warnings about appropriate timing and place. She also reveals a jealous side, which often puts her in embarrassing situations where she is more honest about her desires. Despite her own growing love for Kizuna, Hayuru demonstrates deep loyalty and kindness as a friend, notably supporting the feelings of her close friend, Aine Chidorigafuchi.
In combat, Hayuru wields the Heart Hybrid Gear known as Neros, an armament that grants her the appearance and skills of a samurai. She is a master swordswoman, unmatched by most on Earth, and her true specialty lies in mid-range combat. Her primary weapons include a katana at her waist, but her most distinctive ability is the telekinetic control of four long, slender mechanical blades that float behind her back. These blades can be directed with extreme precision to attack foes from multiple angles simultaneously, making her attacks deadly and difficult to evade. Neros also possesses a devastating Corruption Armament called Gladius, a double-bladed sword that functions by severing the "existence" or "relationship" of anything it touches, allowing it to cut through virtually any material or even supernatural phenomena. After power upgrades, the Gladius can evolve further, growing to immense size and even splitting into three blades with vastly increased destructive capability.
Hayuru's key relationships are central to her story arc. Her dynamic with Kizuna Hida is the most transformative, evolving from distrust and disdain to a deep, romantic bond, despite her initial and continued protests about the immorality of their required activities. She shares a close, if sometimes strained, friendship with her teammate, the free-spirited American ace Yurishia Farandole, whom she respects as a warrior but often finds difficult to manage due to their contrasting personalities. With the younger Sylvia, Hayuru often takes on a protective, maternal role, becoming bothered by the girl's lack of hesitation in performing Hybrids. A notable friendship also develops with Hyakurath, an enemy commander from the Vatlantis Empire, whose similarly strict and diligent personality allows the two to form a deep mutual respect and understanding, transcending their initial hostile positions.
