Description
Ophelia Landlufen, also rendered in some materials as Orphelia Landlufen, is a Genestella fighter from The Asterisk War: The Academy City on the Water who attends the Le Wolfe Black Institute. She is recognizable by her long white hair and red eyes, though she originally had brown hair as a child. The change in her appearance was a consequence of the experiments performed on her body. She is also known by the alias Ereshkigal.

Ophelia was raised in an orphanage and was a childhood friend of Julis-Alexia von Riessfeld. When the orphanage fell into debt, she was handed over to cover what was owed. She became a test subject for the researcher Hilda Jane Rowlands, who worked for the Integrated Enterprise Foundation Frauenlob, the organization that backs the Allekant Académie. Through these experiments she was turned into both a Strega and a Genestella, making her one of the first people to become a Genestella through artificial means rather than natural birth. The process left her with a powerful but unstable ability that she cannot fully control, and the strength of that ability has grown more dangerous as time passes. She was later transferred to the Le Wolfe Black Institute.

In competition, Ophelia has proven herself the strongest fighter in Asterisk. She won the previous Lindwurm Festa, the most prestigious of the city's tournaments, and as a result she is generally considered the top-ranked Genestella in the academy city. Her status and her ties to the organizations that created her make her a significant presence in the story, where she appears as a formidable opponent rather than an ally to the main characters.

Personality-wise, Ophelia comes across as quiet, detached, and deeply affected by what was done to her. She shows little of the warmth she once had as a child, and her behavior reflects the suffering she endured as an experiment. Her motivations are largely tied to her circumstances: she functions as an instrument of the people who control her, and her participation in the Festa serves their interests more than her own. Beneath her subdued surface, the pain of her past remains, and it surfaces when she is confronted by people from her former life.

The most important relationship in her past is with Julis Riessfeld, her childhood best friend. Their reunion in the story is emotionally fraught, since Julis remembers the kind girl Ophelia used to be and is faced with what she has become. Ophelia also has a deeply abusive connection to Hilda Jane Rowlands, the researcher who transformed her and treated her as a failed or disposable experiment. That relationship reaches a breaking point when Ophelia's suppressed rage erupts: after Hilda collapses in horror at what Ophelia has become, Ophelia injects her with a poison that causes excruciating pain and leaves her in a coma.

Although her arc is limited, Ophelia undergoes meaningful development. Her confrontation with Julis brings her buried memories of their friendship to the surface, and her attack on Hilda marks the moment she turns against her tormentor. Rather than a conventional villain, she is defined by the exploitation built into the world of the Festa, and her situation highlights the human cost of the experiments conducted by the foundations. In terms of ability, she combines the enhanced physical capacity and prana of a Genestella with the powers of a Strega, and her uncontrollable strength makes her dangerous not only to her opponents but also to herself.
