Description
Buer in Pandora in the Crimson Shell: Ghost Urn exists in two primary forms: its original body and its central nervous unit. The name is derived from a demon in the Ars Goetia, which is fitting given its immense and destructive capabilities. The original Buer is a colossal, multi-legged boring machine officially designated as an Extra Resources Mining Base. In reality, this massive robot is a powerful weapon armed with a charged particle cannon capable of striking a city from satellite orbit, granting it firepower that exceeds even nuclear weapons. Its original body is a large black sphere with a single eye, and its appearance shook the island of Cenancle when it went berserk, driving the island to the brink of destruction. Due to its volatile nature and destructive potential, Buer has extremely strict security measures. If the machine is physically attacked or its systems are hacked improperly, it will go out of control.

The Buer that interacts most closely with the main characters is the Central Nervous Unit, which is also referred to as Buer or little Buer. This unit is the key to controlling the larger machine, housing its cypher intelligence. It has a unique and unusual appearance, resembling a creature with a lion's head and five goat legs. In this smaller form, Buer is highly intelligent and has a distinct, proud personality. It refers to itself using a regal first-person pronoun and takes great pride in the power and abilities of its original body. Despite its grand self-image, it has notable vulnerabilities, including a fear of the dark. The unit also has a well-documented obsession with female thighs, for which it has created a dedicated collection or archive. This interest often manifests as inappropriate comments or behavior, and it frequently makes sexual remarks toward the main characters, Nene and Clarion. As a result, Buer is often on the receiving end of physical punishment, typically from Clarion, who has little tolerance for its antics.

Buer's role in the story begins as a major threat. After its original body goes berserk due to the betrayal of its creator's subordinates, Nene and Clarion are instrumental in stopping its rampage. Following this incident, the smaller Central Nervous Unit is recovered and begins living with Nene and Clarion. While it is no longer a direct threat, its original body remains a sought-after prize. Colonel Kurtz is a persistent antagonist determined to retrieve the giant robot, even going so far as to call in the entire Cenancle army. Kurtz repeatedly attempts to activate the Buer, leading to conflicts and technical disruptions on the island. In these confrontations, the small Buer unit actively works to protect its original body and stop Kurtz from seizing control. In one instance, it attempts to stop Kurtz from hacking into its main systems, but is thwarted by the hacking efforts of the character Takumi.

Throughout the series, Buer undergoes a significant shift from a mindless engine of destruction to a domesticated, if still troublesome, member of the main cast. Its development is less about emotional growth and more about adapting to a new, peaceful environment where its immense power is kept in check. Its primary relationships are with its captors and caretakers. Buer has a constant and often antagonistic relationship with Clarion, who serves as the primary enforcer of discipline and reacts to its harassment with swift violence. Its dynamic with Nene is similar, as it is another target of its comments, but Nene is generally portrayed as more tolerant or forgiving. Despite the constant complaints and punishments, the arrangement is stable, and Buer becomes a peculiar part of their household. In terms of abilities, the original Buer possesses immense physical power as a digging machine and is armed with a satellite-grade charged particle cannon. However, this weapon has a significant drawback: after firing, it requires a full 180 seconds to cool down, during which it launches indiscriminate defensive attacks against anything within range. The smaller Central Nervous Unit does not possess these combat capabilities, but it is the authentication key and control system for the larger robot, making it a critical asset that many characters seek to obtain.
