Description
Cathy, also known as Magic Crystal, is the sentient spirit residing within a crystal ball owned by the Headmaster of the magic school. Her true name, Cathy, is used almost exclusively by the Headmaster, while most other characters refer to her simply as Miss Crystal.
Within the crystal ball, Cathy usually appears as the silhouette of a young woman wearing a witch's hat, with curly hair and a dark top. Despite being an object, she exhibits very human-like behaviors; she can float and move on her own, coughs when dusty, and reacts to changes in temperature. A unique and notable trait is that her physical appearance is mysteriously linked to the Headmaster's own state. When he ages or loses his magical power, the reflection in the ball becomes that of an old woman with wrinkles, and when his youth is restored, she returns to her younger form as well.
Cathy has a distinctive and multifaceted personality. She is typically polite in her manner of speaking and often acts as a wise and trusted advisor to the Headmaster. However, she is also whimsical, a little prideful, and can be quite moody. She does not hesitate to complain when asked to perform difficult or lengthy fortune-telling tasks, and she has a playful, often sarcastic relationship with the Head Teacher, whom she enjoys teasing. Despite her occasional grumpiness, she is good-hearted and willing to help, especially when approached politely.
Cathy's history with the Headmaster goes back hundreds, and possibly thousands, of years, with evidence showing she has been his close companion since his own youth as a student. Her primary role in the story is as a source of guidance and information. She acts as the Headmasters confidante and delivers important oracles or predictions about future events, such as the awakening of the Linkle Stones. She also provides advice to the main heroines, Mirai Asahina and Liko Izayoi, and can communicate with them through a separate crystal ball they carry on their journey.
Her key relationships are central to her character. Her bond with the Headmaster is her most significant, marked by deep trust, mutual support, and a shared fate. In contrast, her relationship with the Head Teacher is one of constant, amusing friction, as Cathy uses sharp words and jokes at her expense. With Mirai and Liko, she is a helpful, if sometimes cryptic, mentor figure.
Over the course of the story, Cathys development is shown through her deepening interactions with the younger characters and in the revelations about her long past with the Headmaster, as seen when she shares stories of his school days. A notable moment of development is in episode twenty, when her shared fate with the Headmaster is visually demonstrated as both become elderly together, highlighting the depth of their magical connection.
Notable abilities include clairvoyance, as she can perform fortune-telling to see the future. Her predictions, however, are always delivered in a vague, poetic, and often confusing manner, and she does not always understand their meaning herself. Performing these fortunes requires significant effort from her, with more complex questions taking more time and energy. Additionally, Cathy can manifest her consciousness across multiple crystal balls simultaneously, creating a magical communication network that allows individuals in different locations to speak with her, though she can only hold one conversation at a time.
