Description
Batty is a character from the magical girl anime series Mahou Tsukai Precure. He is a humanoid creature created from a bat by the great dark magician Dokurokushe, serving as one of his primary minions and a member of the group known as the Dark Magicians.
In appearance, Batty has pale blue skin, red eyes, and large bat-like ears. His attire is a formal and elegant black tuxedo or suit, complete with a long black and red cape, knee-high black boots, and a distinctive orange scarf or fur collar around his neck. He carries a staff decorated with a skull, which he uses as a focus for his dark magic.
Batty’s personality is defined by a striking contrast between his outward manner and his inner nature. On the surface, he is consistently polite, well-spoken, and gentlemanly, always maintaining a smile and speaking with formal courtesy. However, this demeanor masks a cold and ruthless core. He is utterly dedicated to achieving his master's goals, particularly the acquisition of the Linkle Stone Emerald, and is willing to use any means necessary, including harming innocent people, to succeed. He can be condescending, often looking down on humans from the magic world and underestimating his opponents, especially the Precure. Despite his cruelty, he is not entirely without feeling; he demonstrates a degree of care for his fellow dark magicians, showing concern when his comrade Sparda loses control of her power and expressing sadness at their defeats, even if he tries to hide it.
Batty’s primary motivation throughout the early and middle parts of the story is to serve Dokurokushe and retrieve the Linkle Stone Emerald. His role in the narrative is pivotal from the very beginning, as he is the first major enemy to confront the protagonists, Mirai Asahina and Liko Izayoi. His attack and demand for the Emerald directly trigger their first transformation into the legendary warriors, the Precure. As an executive of the dark magicians, he frequently reports to his superior, Yamoh, and is sent on missions to search for the emerald and the Wrinkle Smartbook.
Throughout his time as an antagonist, Batty repeatedly clashes with the Precure, summoning monsters called Yokubaru to do his bidding by fusing dark magic with everyday objects. He is often accompanied by his fellow dark magicians, the hot-headed Sparda and the strong but dim-witted Gamettsu. While he initially acts as part of their trio, he is often shown bickering with Yamoh, whose orders he sometimes questions. After the defeat of Sparda and Gamettsu, Batty begins to doubt the true nature of his master. This crisis of loyalty culminates in him directly confronting Dokurokushe, who rewards his devotion by granting him a new, monstrous form. By fusing his own wand with those of his fallen comrades, he transforms into a powerful creature with six arms, a reptilian shell, and wings, combining the abilities of a spider and a turtle with his own aerial combat skills. In this empowered state, he proves to be a formidable challenge for the Precure before he is ultimately defeated by their magic.
The most significant turning point for Batty occurs when he reaches for the awakened Linkle Stone Emerald. The stone's pure, powerful light purifies his dark magic, reverting him to the form of an ordinary bat. Later, he is revived by the villain Orba, but finds himself without a master or purpose, falling into a deep existential depression. His character arc culminates when he learns that he and his comrades were merely tools created for the resurrection of the entity known as Chaos. This revelation gives him a new reason to fight, and he takes a stand against Orba, using the spirits and animal forms of his former allies to create a powerful monster that defeats the main villain. Batty’s development is completed in the series' epilogue, where he accepts an invitation from Liko to join the Magic School. He becomes a student, wearing the school's blue uniform, and is shown living peacefully alongside his former enemies, even looking after his old comrades who remain in their animal forms. In a later sequel series, he is depicted as an ally from the start, helping to research dark magic and investigating new threats.
In terms of notable abilities, Batty is an expert at aerial combat, able to fly using his cape as wings. He is also proficient in information gathering and espionage, often seen hanging upside down in high places to observe his targets. As a creature of dark magic, he can levitate, teleport, and use his staff to summon Yokubaru. His most powerful technique is absorbing the magical staves of his defeated comrades to transform into a much stronger, fusion-based form that grants him enhanced strength and the ability to fire webs.
