Marie Hanazono is a second-year middle school student at Jewel Academy and a major character in Jewelpet Happiness. She acts as a minor antagonistic figure and a rival to Chiari, the main protagonist. Marie comes across as headstrong, strong-minded, and spoiled, with a haughty and determined personality. She is deeply motivated by a desire to obtain a Magic Gem of her own, believing that such a gem will make her more beautiful or special. This drive leads her to pursue any Jewelpet in hopes of forming a bond strong enough to create a gem, and she is willing to go to great lengths to achieve that goal, including trying to steal Ruby and Chiari’s gems when under the influence of the Red Moon. Marie keeps a close watch on Kosuke, a popular upperclassman she has a crush on, and is often accompanied by Nobara, an underclassman who acts as her assistant and records events in a notebook. Despite her rivalry with Chiari, Marie occasionally shows moments of development, and her single-minded pursuit of a Magic Gem defines much of her role in the story. She does not possess any magical abilities herself but relies on her strong will and occasional manipulation to try to get what she wants. Her relationships with other students, such as her laid-back roommate Mutsumi, further highlight her determined yet socially focused nature.
