Description
Created as an artificial human originally named Lazuli, C18 was forcibly transformed into a cyborg by the Red Ribbon Armys Dr. Gero alongside her twin brother, Android 17. These modifications granted her superhuman strength, speed, the ability to fly, and a perpetual energy reactor that provides inexhaustible stamina. Despite her cybernetic enhancements, her cellular structure remains largely organic, allowing her to age slowly, sustain biological functions, and later have a child. Designed as a weapon for Gero's vendetta against Goku, she and her brother rebelled against their creator almost immediately after activation.
In Dragon Ball Super, C18 has evolved considerably from her initial role as a morally ambiguous antagonist. Her personality has grown to be kinder and more compassionate, often seen smiling and engaging more openly with her family and allies. While she retains a cool confidence, dry sarcasm, and a pragmatic, no-nonsense demeanor, these traits are now balanced by a strong protective instinct toward her husband Krillin and their daughter Marron. She is emotionally supportive of Krillin, offering him encouragement during moments of self-doubt, and has become more integrated into the Z-Fighters' social circle, willingly participating in activities like a bingo tournament at Bulma's party.
Her motivations are primarily grounded in her family's well-being rather than grand heroic ideals. Financial pragmatism is a recurring theme, as she frequently encourages Krillin to compete in tournaments for prize money. This extends to her decision to join the Tournament of Power; although she initially demanded payment, her true motivation shifted upon recognizing the serious desperation in Goku and Gohan's offers, correctly deducing that the stakes were far higher than just monetary reward. During the tournament, her commitment to her universe became evident as she fought earnestly and demonstrated a powerful, protective love for her family, drawing strength from her bond with Krillin and Marron to defeat powerful opponents like Ribrianne.
Key relationships define her role in the story. Her marriage to Krillin, which began after he chose to spare her life, is a central pillar of her character development. Their dynamic shows her becoming more openly affectionate, even blushing when Bulma suggested that she and Marron were the best gift Krillin could ever want. Her relationship with her brother, Android 17, is more complex. They have grown somewhat distant since the Cell Saga, with C18 appearing cold toward him upon their reunion and threatening him for mispronouncing her daughter's name. Despite this, their twin bond remains powerful, as they can work together seamlessly in combat and strategize effectively, and she was visibly distraught at the prospect of losing him. Her connection to the wider Z-Fighter community, including Bulma and Goku, is now that of a reliable, if sometimes reluctant, ally in Earth's defense.
Throughout Dragon Ball Super, C18s development continues to focus on her adaptation to a peaceful life as a wife and mother, contrasting sharply with her destructive past and the ruthless, murderous version of herself from Future Trunks's timeline. She maintains her role as a capable fighter, participating in major conflicts such as the battle against the God of Destruction Beerus and the fight against the revived Frieza, where she was killed when the Earth was destroyed before time was reversed. Her notable abilities include her infinite stamina, which allows her to outlast opponents who tire over time, her proficiency in energy attacks like the Destructo Disc, and her formidable close-quarters combat skills. A key limitation, however, is her inability to sense ki, which can leave her vulnerable to being surprised by attacks she cannot detect. She demonstrates her ongoing relevance in the story's later events, serving as a key reinforcement against the bio-weapon Cell Max.
