Description
Buu in Dragon Ball Super is essentially a continuation of the "Mr. Buu" persona, the childlike and rotund version of the character who chose to remain on Earth after the defeat of Kid Buu. His background is rooted in this decision, having settled into a peaceful life on Earth as a friend and housemate of the world's champion, Mr. Satan. This arrangement has significantly shaped his existence, as Mr. Satan has become Buu's closest companion and the primary influence on his behavior in times of peace.
Personality wise, Buu retains his signature childishness, naivety, and love for food and play. He is generally good-natured and lazy, often content to nap for extended periods. However, this placid exterior belies his immense and unpredictable power. While typically friendly, he has a short temper and is prone to extreme and violent reactions when angered, particularly if his friend Mr. Satan is threatened or harmed. This demonstrates that his primary motivation is not heroism but a simple desire for a comfortable, fun life alongside the few individuals he cares about. He fights not out of a sense of duty but out of personal connection or a sudden whim.
In the narrative of Dragon Ball Super, Buu's role is that of a powerful but unreliable ally for Universe 7. His immense strength and unique abilities make him a formidable asset, but his laziness and childlike nature often prevent him from being available when most needed. This is most famously illustrated during the lead-up to the Tournament of Power, where he earns a spot on the team after a successful exhibition match against Basil of Universe 9, but ultimately falls into a deep sleep from which he cannot be woken in time for the main tournament.
Despite this, the manga explores his role much more deeply during the Galactic Patrol Prisoner saga. His unique physiology becomes a critical strategic advantage against the villain Moro, a sorcerer whose magic can drain the energy of conventional fighters like Goku and Vegeta. Buu’s body, which is more like a malleable, magical substance than a standard physical form, makes him completely immune to Moro’s energy absorption abilities. This immunity, combined with his latent power, positions him as one of the most effective fighters against this specific foe.
His key relationship remains with Mr. Satan, who acts as a moral compass and surrogate family. This bond is so strong that Buu's rage is most reliably triggered when Mr. Satan is in danger, as seen when he brutally defeated Basil after the fighter accidentally struck the champion. A more complex and significant relationship is with the dormant Grand Supreme Kai, or Daikaioh, whose persona has been absorbed within him since the events of Dragon Ball Z. During the fight with Moro, an ancient enemy of the Daikaioh, this dormant god's consciousness fully awakens within Buu. This transformation grants Buu access to the Daikaioh's memories, strategic mind, and divine abilities, making him even more powerful and focused.
This development represents a significant evolution for the character, as the Daikaioh's personality temporarily takes the forefront, using Buu's body to battle Moro with a righteous fury that the normal Buu rarely displays. He demonstrates newfound powers, such as the ability to heal others, generate multiple limbs as projectiles, and regenerate from severe damage in creative ways. However, this is a temporary state; once the battle is won, the Daikaioh's presence recedes, and the original, amnesiac Buu personality returns to his body, effectively having slept through the most crucial fight of his recent life.
Notable abilities that define Buu in the series include his near-perfect regeneration, allowing him to recover from any attack as long as a part of him remains. He can reshape his body at will, stretching, contorting, and creating new limbs for combat. He also retains his signature technique of transmuting matter, such as turning opponents or objects into candy, though he uses this power less frequently as an ally. His fighting style is uniquely unorthodox, characterized by a disarming carelessness as he bounces around the arena and laughingly absorbs hits that would fell other warriors. His most critical ability, showcased against Moro, is his complete immunity to magical energy draining, a power that stems from his magical, non-humanoid biology and the dormant godly essence within him.
