Josh Martin
Description
Josh Martin is an American voice actor known for his work in English dubs of anime series and films, particularly those produced by Funimation. Born James Joshua Martin on March 4, 1975, in Shreveport, Louisiana, his path to voice acting was unconventional, beginning with a career in live performance and children's television.
Before establishing himself as a voice actor, Martin spent over a decade as a costume performer for the beloved children's character Barney the Dinosaur. Starting in 1996 after being convinced to audition by a faculty member, he performed as Barney for various live tours and television appearances until 2009. This period included performing in the Barney's Big Surprise tour and providing puppetry for characters like Blue Jay on Come on Over to Barney's House.
Martin's transition to anime voice acting was serendipitous and directly linked to his work in live comedy. He was a member of a comedy troupe with fellow actors Chris Rager and Mike McFarland. During a performance where Martin portrayed a character named The Pillsbury Homeboy, a rapping parody of the Pillsbury Doughboy, he was seen by Chris Sabat, a prominent voice director and actor at Funimation. Impressed by the unique voice Martin had created, Sabat approached him after the show, leading to Martin being cast as his first major anime role: the child-like but immensely powerful Majin Buu in the English dub of Dragon Ball Z.
This role would become his most iconic. Martin provided the voices for Majin Buu, as well as his other forms, Kid Buu and Evil Buu, for Funimation's dub of the series. He later reprised the role of Majin Buu in subsequent franchise installments, including Dragon Ball Super. In addition to his work on Dragon Ball Z, he also voiced the villain Commander Red in the earlier Dragon Ball series.
Beyond his defining work in the Dragon Ball franchise, Martin has built a diverse portfolio of anime voice roles. He voiced the character Rhisely, the leader of a doomsday cult, in the Funimation dub of the 1995 film Lupin III: Farewell to Nostradamus. He also provided the English voice for the hapless but good-hearted Larry Butz, the childhood friend of the protagonist, in the second season of the Ace Attorney anime, which adapts the game Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Trials and Tribulations.
His voice work extends to many other popular and long-running anime series. He has been involved in English dubs for shows such as Fire Force, Dr. Stone, Fruits Basket, My Hero Academia, and Attack on Titan, though specific character roles in these series are not detailed in available sources. His career demonstrates a strong and ongoing association with Funimation, frequently working alongside a consistent group of voice actors from the Texas-based industry, including Chris Sabat, Dameon Clarke, and Kyle Hebert.
