Description
Android 15 is a fictional antagonist from the Dragon Ball Z film Super Android 13!. He is an artificial being, specifically designated as the fifteenth model in a series created by the villainous scientist Dr. Gero. Android 15 was designed with a singular, overriding directive: to exact Dr. Gero's revenge on the Saiyan warrior Son Goku, who had dismantled the Red Ribbon Army years earlier. Notably, in the original concept art by the series' creator, Akira Toriyama, this character was labeled as Android 14, but the animation studio swapped the names of the two androids during production for reasons related to story development.
In terms of appearance, Android 15 is the most visually distinctive of the three android antagonists in the film. He is very short in stature and has a small build, with dark skin and large lips. His attire is flamboyant and has often been compared to a stereotypical pimp outfit, consisting of a large green hat with a red ball on top, dark sunglasses, a red bow tie bearing the Red Ribbon Army logo, a black and white tuxedo shirt, a dark yellow and blue overcoat, baggy light blue pants, and black boots. Underneath his hat, his head is revealed to be a white glass dome, exposing his mechanical brain and electronic components, a design feature similar to Androids 19 and 20. His eyes are also completely mechanical.
As an android, Android 15 displays very little emotion and his personality is largely defined by his programming. He is a stoic and focused killer, showing little interest in anything other than completing his mission to eliminate Goku. In the original Japanese version of the film, his dialogue is extremely limited, consisting of only the words Son Goku and Trunks. However, in the English Funimation dub, his character was given a more exaggerated personality, speaking with a comedic African American accent and uttering phrases like "Okay... let's dance." He also has a memorable visual quirk of drinking from a small flask during the film.
Android 15's motivations are not personal but purely programmatic. He is one of three androids (alongside Android 13 and Android 14) who were left incomplete when Dr. Gero was killed by his own creations, Android 17 and Android 18. An underground supercomputer left by Gero continued his work, eventually completing these final three models to carry out his vendetta. Android 15 and his counterpart, Android 14, are activated first and immediately set out to find and kill Goku.
In the story, Android 15 and Android 14 launch a devastating surprise attack on Goku and his family while they are dining at a restaurant in a city. After a brief skirmish, the battle moves to an isolated arctic region where the Z-Fighters can fight without endangering civilians. While Goku faces Android 13 and Trunks fights Android 14, Android 15 engages in a fierce one-on-one battle with the Saiyan prince, Vegeta. Initially, the fight is even, with Android 15 proving powerful enough to challenge Vegeta, even landing blows that knock the Saiyan out of his Super Saiyan form. However, Vegeta ultimately turns the tide by transforming into a Super Saiyan and delivers a decisive, decapitating punch that destroys Android 15. The most significant aspect of his role is that his destruction is not in vain for the villains; Android 13 absorbs the essential components and battle data from the remains of both Android 15 and Android 14, using them to transform into the far more powerful Super Android 13.
Android 15 possesses a number of notable abilities that make him a formidable threat. He has the standard capabilities of Dr. Gero's androids, including unlimited stamina, the ability to fly without using ki, and the power to fire various types of energy blasts. One of his most useful tools is his 3D Scan Mode, which allows him to analyze his opponents' fighting styles and predict their movements with high accuracy, a skill directly linked to the supercomputer that created him. He can also generate a powerful Android Barrier for defense. Offensively, he and Android 14 can perform a Combined Energy Ball, a powerful, gigantic sphere of energy they used to destroy the restaurant where Goku was eating. He also has several named attacks in video games, such as the Murder Ball, a full-power energy sphere, and Android Strike 15, a rushing melee combo. As an android, his development is static; he does not grow or learn throughout the film. He is a complete creation from the moment he is activated, and his entire existence serves the purpose of being a tool for revenge, first as an independent fighter and then as a component for the film's primary villain.
