Description
Naiz Gruen Caliente, known as the "Fairy of the Desert," hailed from Gruen Village in the Caliente Fiefdom of the Sharod Federation. Trained in swordsmanship from childhood by his father Solda alongside his brother Est and friend Yogun, his life altered irrevocably at age fifteen during a monster hunt. Facing death, he instinctively awakened his spatial magic to survive, a power kept hidden to avoid persecution by the Holy Church.
Years later, after joining the army, Naiz was betrayed by Yogun to the fiefdom's ruler, Bolemos, motivated by jealousy. Bolemos plotted to adopt Naiz by eliminating his family. Warned too late by Yogun, Naiz raced home only to find his mother killed by villagers seeking Bolemos's favor. His father sacrificed himself to delay pursuers, and Yogun died rescuing Naiz. Consumed by rage, Naiz unleashed his spatial magic, annihilating the village and Bolemos's forces. Horrified by the destruction, he vowed never to use his powers for violence again and retreated into isolation.
For a decade, Naiz lived as an irak herder within the Grand Gruen Volcano, discreetly employing his magic to rescue desert travelers. This earned him the title "Guardian of the Desert." Sisters Susha and Yunfa, whom he saved, later altered this to "Fairy of the Desert" to protect his anonymity. His solitary existence ended when he saved Miledi Reisen and Oscar Orcus from sandworms. Initially refusing to join their cause, Miledi's persistence and their shared status as Ancient Magic users gradually drew him into the Liberators, a group fighting the tyranny of the gods.
Physically imposing at two meters tall with a massive frame, Naiz possessed rust-red spiky hair and hawk-like rust-red eyes. He typically wore a faded grey robe secured by a white sash. Stoic and taciturn, he rarely displayed emotion but carried profound grief over his past. Fiscally responsible and skilled with numbers, he had once managed a business. He exhibited marked discomfort around flirtatious women, particularly Susha and Yunfa, who openly pursued him.
His combat prowess combined formidable physical strength with spatial magic. Trained by his father, he excelled in hand-to-hand combat and swordsmanship, though his blade skills slightly dulled after focusing on magic. As an Atavist wielding Ancient Magic, he possessed immense mana reserves, enabling prolonged spellcasting without fatigue. His spatial magic allowed manipulation of space and boundaries, featuring techniques including: Cosmic Rift for creating gates between points; Celestial Mirror for viewing distant locations; Void Fangs, Void Shatter, and Void Cannon as offensive spells warping or cutting space; and Infinite Corridor to expand space infinitely, trapping targets. He also mastered all elemental magic, mana manipulation, body strengthening, and sensory magic. His artifacts included Twin Scimitars forged by Oscar, Obsidian Spectacles enchanted for enhanced vision and perception, and the Metal Slime Batlam for automatic defense.
Within the Liberators, Naiz evolved from reluctant recruit to dedicated leader. His bond with Miledi and Oscar helped him accept his magic as a tool for justice. He participated in constructing the Gruen Labyrinth within the Grand Gruen Volcano, embedding trials powered by his spatial magic. His later years involved strategic battles against divine forces, including confronting the Apostle Ahat. In his final act, he sacrificed himself to protect Miledi during a conflict, leaving a recorded message: "I pray the day comes where people can be free."
His legacy persisted through the Gruen Labyrinth's trials and a pendant-shaped proof of conquest depicting a woman holding a lantern, designed to guide challengers to Meiru Melusine's labyrinth. The name "Gruen" references the "Gruen transfer" psychological phenomenon related to spatial disorientation, while "Caliente," meaning "hot" in Spanish, alludes to his volcanic labyrinth.
