Description
The character known as East Kaiohshin has the true name of Shin, though he is sometimes referred to by his original Glind name, Nahare. Physically, he is a short, purple-skinned deity with a distinctive white pompadour hairstyle, and he wears the traditional attire of his station along with the Potara earrings, which are symbols of divine office and tools for fusion. His background is deeply rooted in a traumatic event that reshaped his universe; he is the sole survivor of the five Kaiohshin from Universe 7 after the ancient rampage of the evil wizard Bibidi and his creation, Majin Buu. As the youngest and least powerful of the five, he was spared when his fellow gods were either killed or absorbed while trying to protect him.

In terms of personality, Shin initially comes across as serious, enigmatic, and somewhat overbearing, but this facade masks a deep-seated insecurity born from surviving the tragedy that destroyed his peers. He can be cautious and easily intimidated by forces beyond his understanding, but he is fundamentally well-meaning, selfless, and committed to his duty as a creator god and protector of the mortal realm. His motivations are consistently driven by the preservation of life and the prevention of another cosmic disaster like Majin Buu, which he carries a heavy sense of responsibility for.

Within the story of Dragon Ball Super, Shin continues to fulfill his role as the reigning Kaiohshin of Universe 7, often accompanied by his loyal attendant, Kibito, from whom he has since separated after a long period of being fused into the being Kibitoshin. His most prominent role is during the Future Trunks arc. In this narrative, he becomes deeply involved in investigating the rogue Kaiohshin apprentice, Zamasu, from Universe 10. Shin is disturbed by Zamasu's growing hatred for mortals and his study of supreme deities. Shin's actions are pivotal as he uses the Ring of Time to confirm that a future version of Zamasu has stolen Goku's body to become Goku Black, and he reports this critical information to the God of Destruction, Beerus. He also demonstrates a profound sense of responsibility when he travels to the devastated future timeline to save Trunks and Mai from Goku Black and Zamasu and later entrusts his own Potara earrings to Goku, urging him to fuse into Vegito to counter the fused Zamasu.

Key relationships define his character and development. His bond with his attendant Kibito is one of long-standing partnership and loyalty. A significant relationship is formed with the Supreme Kai of Universe 10, Gowasu, and his apprentice Zamasu; Shin initially holds Zamasu in high regard, calling him one of the most skilled fighters among all Kaiohshin, which makes the discovery of his turn to evil all the more impactful. His dynamic with the Saiyans, particularly Goku and Vegeta, forces him to constantly re-evaluate the limits of divine power in the face of mortal strength. Shin’s personal development across the series sees him move from a position of presumed authority and secret-keeping to a more humble and supportive role, acknowledging that Goku and his friends are often better equipped to handle the universe's gravest threats. Notably, his own origins are expanded upon, as he is revealed to be a Glind from the Second Demon Realm, and he possesses siblings including a sister named Arinsu and a brother named Degesu.

As a deity, Shin possesses a variety of notable abilities that distinguish him from ordinary fighters. He can use a form of teleportation that differs from Goku's, allowing instantaneous travel without needing to sense a specific energy signature. He has powerful extrasensory perception, including the ability to read minds and sense the purity of a being's heart, as he does when first shaking Goku's hand. He can use telekinesis to restrain powerful opponents, demonstrated when he used a "binding" technique to hold Super Saiyan 2 Gohan in place, and can create physical objects from nothing, such as the near-indestructible metal known as Kachin. He also possesses the ability to heal others and restore their stamina, a power he uses on multiple occasions. While his combat power is far surpassed by the Saiyans and the gods of destruction, it is still immensely superior to most beings, stated to be capable of defeating Freeza with a single strike.
