Description
Doyen Kaioh Shin, most often referred to simply as Shin, is the Eastern Supreme Kai of Universe 7 in Dragon Ball Super. He belongs to the divine race known as the Shin-jin, born from a rare golden fruit on the sacred Planet Kaishin, which destined him for his divine status and granted him an immense lifespan of millions of years. Shin is easily recognized by his unique physical traits, which include pointed ears, a distinctive white mohawk, and round features such as his nose. He wears the traditional attire of a Supreme Kai, a formal outfit that typically consists of a colored tunic with a single button at the chest, complemented by a sash around the waist and the Potara earrings that are signature to his kind.

Personality-wise, Shin carries the immense responsibility of being a Creator God, tasked with fostering life and maintaining balance across the universe. He generally upholds a strong moral standard and believes that a Supreme Kai must behave with appropriate dignity and decorum. However, his character also reveals a more vulnerable and sometimes naive side. Having witnessed the slaughter of his fellow Supreme Kais at the hands of Majin Buu millennia ago, Shin can appear cautious and often overestimates threats while underestimating the capabilities of mortal fighters like the Saiyans. His long period of isolation following the deaths of his peers has left him surprisingly ignorant of certain divine matters; for example, he was initially unaware of the Omni-King Zens existence and unfamiliar with divine techniques like Ultra Instinct, which other gods take for granted.

Shins primary motivation throughout the events of Dragon Ball Super is to protect the stability of Universe 7. This often manifests as a deep concern for the safety of the Kaioshin realm and the cosmic equilibrium that he is sworn to preserve. He is notably anxious about the actions of the God of Destruction, Beerus, because the lives of a Supreme Kai and their universe's God of Destruction are linked; if Shin were to die, Beerus would also perish, leaving the universe vulnerable. This connection creates a dynamic where Shin must tolerate Beerus's often rude and temperamental behavior. Their relationship is frequently strained, as Beerus views Shin as weak or annoying, while Shin struggles to keep the volatile destroyer focused on his duties instead of slacking off or destroying for trivial reasons.

Shins role in the story evolves from a mysterious overseer to a key participant in universal affairs. Initially, he attempts to guide the heroes from the shadows, but as the scale of threats grows, he becomes more directly involved. He serves as a crucial informational bridge, explaining the hierarchy of the gods, the nature of the multiverse, and the rules of divine conflicts. His relationship with Kibito, his former attendant, is notable; after an unintentional and permanent fusion via Potara earrings, he and Kibito were initially combined into a single being, though they later separate off-screen before the Tournament of Power.

Despite being a god of creation rather than combat, Shin possesses formidable abilities. His power level is significantly higher than that of the North, South, and West Kais who fell before him, and it is stated that he could have defeated the tyrant Frieza with a single blow. His divine abilities include telekinesis, teleportation, and the capacity to materialize objects. He can also use his magic to unlock the potential of other warriors, a technique that draws out a fighters hidden power far beyond normal limits. While he is not a frontline fighter on par with the Saiyans or the Gods of Destruction, his authority as a Supreme Kai allows him to traverse the realms freely and observe the mortal world, making him a vital guardian of the universe's continued existence.
