Description
Kaioh du Nord is a deity from the Dragon Ball series, most prominently featured in Dragon Ball Z. Within the divine hierarchy of Universe 7, he serves as the guardian and ruler of the Northern Quadrant of the universe, a vast region that includes Earth. His residence is a small, circular planet with gravity ten times that of Earth, located at the end of the long Serpent Road in the Other World.
In terms of personality, Kaioh du Nord is famously eccentric and jovial. He possesses a significant sense of humor and is particularly fond of puns and bad jokes, to the point that he often requires a potential student to make him laugh before agreeing to train them. Despite this playful and sometimes immature demeanor, he is a figure of great wisdom and intelligence. He demonstrates a deep understanding of the universe and its many threats, and he takes his role as a mentor and divine overseer seriously, showing genuine concern for his students and the safety of the galaxy.
Kaioh du Nord's primary role in the broader story is that of a mentor. He is the fourth martial arts master of the protagonist, Son Goku. After Goku sacrifices himself to defeat Raditz, he travels to Kaioh's planet to train. During this period, Kaioh teaches him two legendary techniques that become staples of his arsenal: the Kaio-ken, a technique that multiplies the user's power and speed, and the Genki Dama (Spirit Bomb), an attack that gathers energy from surrounding life forms and matter.
His key relationships are primarily with his students. His most famous pupil is Son Goku, toward whom he acts as a wise, if occasionally goofy, mentor. He later trains other Z-Fighters who arrive on his planet, including Yamcha, Tien Shinhan, Chiaotzu, and Piccolo. He also has a noted comedic rivalry with the Kaioh of the West, which becomes particularly evident during the Other World tournament filler arc, where they argue over the strength of their respective pupils. He is always accompanied by his two pets and attendants, a monkey named Bubbles and a grasshopper-like creature named Gregory.
Regarding his development, Kaioh du Nord is a static character who does not undergo significant personal change throughout the series. His function is to facilitate the growth of others. Notably, he is killed when Cell self-destructs on his planet, though as a deity already residing in the Other World, this does not have a major impact on his existence. He is later revived with a wish on the Dragon Balls.
As a deity, his notable abilities extend beyond combat. He possesses powerful telepathy, allowing him to observe events anywhere in the universe and communicate across vast distances, even linking the minds of billions of individuals. He is also capable of using telekinesis and materializing objects from thin air.
In Dragon Ball Super, his role is significantly reduced compared to Dragon Ball Z. He makes occasional cameo appearances, typically in the Other World, where he is seen observing the new, higher-tier deities like the God of Destruction Beerus and his attendant Whis. In this series, he largely serves as a background character, commenting on events and reprising his role as a wise observer of the cosmic order. One of his few notable actions in the series is a request to be resurrected in the lead-up to the Tournament of Power, though this does not come to pass.
