Description
Ginyu is the captain of the Ginyu Special Forces, an elite mercenary group serving under the tyrant Frieza. In the narrative of Dragon Ball Super, Ginyu makes a return after having been trapped in the body of a small, amphibious creature since the events on the planet Namek in the original Dragon Ball Z series. He is a tall, muscular humanoid with predominantly purple skin, red eyes, and two distinct black horns protruding from his head. Notably, this purple body is not his original form; it is a vessel he acquired through his signature ability, meaning his true appearance remains unknown.
Ginyu possesses a complex and theatrical personality. On one hand, he is an honorable and battle-hungry warrior who values fairness in combat, as demonstrated when he refuses to take cheap shots at an opponent and even threatens his own subordinate for interfering in a one-on-one duel. Goku himself notes this trait, suggesting that Ginyu is not entirely evil at his core. On the other hand, he is utterly ruthless and arrogant, showing no hesitation in eliminating those who fail to meet his standards. He is deeply loyal to Frieza, viewing him with genuine worship, and follows his master's orders without question. Ginyu is also known for his flamboyant and deliberately ridiculous fighting poses, which he considers essential for boosting morale and team spirit, though his theatrical nature often contrasts sharply with his sinister actions.
Ginyu's primary motivation has always been to serve Frieza and prove himself as the emperor's most trusted soldier. He derives great excitement from facing powerful opponents and seeks to acquire stronger bodies for himself through his unique ability. In Dragon Ball Super, after years of suffering as a frog on Earth, his driving motivation shifts toward revenge against the Saiyans, specifically Goku and Vegeta, whom he blames for his humiliating imprisonment. He is also driven by a desperate desire to regain a powerful form and return to Frieza's side.
Within the story of Dragon Ball Super, Ginyu reappears during the Golden Frieza arc. Having lived as a frog for years, he seizes an opportunity when Frieza's forces invade Earth. After being subjected to years of torment, including being used as a toy by Trunks and nearly being eaten by snakes, Ginyu tricks a powerful soldier named Tagoma into triggering his body-switching technique. By scratching the words "change now" into the dirt for Tagoma to read aloud, Ginyu successfully steals Tagoma's body. He then presents himself to the resurrected Frieza, who is pleased to have his elite captain back. In his new, powerful body, Ginyu wreaks havoc on the Earth's defenders, easily overpowering fighters like Piccolo, Tien Shinhan, and Master Roshi, and critically wounding many of them before confronting Gohan.
Ginyu's key relationships are primarily defined by his service to Frieza, to whom he remains intensely loyal even after years of being trapped as a frog. He views the Saiyans, especially Goku and Vegeta, with deep-seated hatred and a desire for revenge after they were responsible for his original defeat and years of suffering. His relationship with his former teammates also matters to him, as he becomes furious upon learning of their deaths at the hands of the heroes.
In terms of character development, Ginyu shows little moral change but demonstrates an almost inhuman level of patience and resilience. He bides his time for years, enduring the humiliation and hardship of life as a frog, waiting for a single moment to reclaim his power. This experience intensifies his rage and his desperate yearning for revenge, making him more vicious and spiteful than his initial appearance as a confident, playful elite warrior. His end comes when Vegeta, having arrived on the battlefield, delivers a cold and final judgment: "If you had stayed on your lily pad, you wouldn't have had to die." Vegeta then kills Ginyu with a single energy blast, permanently ending the captain's long and tumultuous existence.
Ginyu's most notable ability is his trademark technique, Body Change. To perform this, he shouts "Change now!" and releases a beam of energy from his mouth, which allows him to swap his consciousness and soul with that of another living being. He often injures his original body before using this technique, so his opponent receives a damaged vessel. While this ability allows him to theoretically steal the power of any being, it has a significant flaw: he cannot immediately access the full power of a new body if it requires specific techniques or a fighting style he does not understand. This was evident when he stole Goku's body but could only access a fraction of its power. Beyond this signature move, Ginyu is also a highly skilled combatant in his own right, boasting a tremendous power level of 120,000 in his purple body. He is also a cunning strategist with impressive analytical skills, as he was the only member of his squad to quickly deduce that Goku could raise his power level at will rather than relying on a static reading from a scouter.
