Description
Kame sen’nin, also known as the Turtle Hermit or by his formal title Muten Rōshi (武天老師), is a legendary figure within the martial arts world. Recognized as the God of Martial Arts, he is an ancient and immensely skilled Earthling who serves as a foundational character due to his role as the original teacher of many of the series’ primary fighters. He resides in a small house known as the Kame House on a solitary island in the South Sea.
In terms of background, Kame sen’nin was trained under the master Mutaito alongside his fellow student, Tsuru sen’nin, who would later become his rival. Long before the main story begins, he climbed Karin Tower and trained under the divine cat Karin, a feat that no one had accomplished for three hundred years prior to his arrival. He also witnessed his own master’s use of the Evil Containment Wave, a technique that sealed the great demon Piccolo Daimaō centuries ago. Through rigorous training and, according to some accounts, the consumption of a special water, he has achieved an extraordinary lifespan, being well over three hundred years old while still maintaining a robust physique.
Physically, Kame sen’nin appears as an old man with a bald head, thick white mustache and beard, and a small stature of approximately 160 centimeters. He is almost never seen without his signature round red sunglasses and often wears casual attire such as floral print shirts, though in battle he may don a martial arts uniform. Despite his aged appearance, he can undergo a drastic transformation by unleashing his Full Power state, where his muscles bulk up to an enormous size, granting him immense physical strength at the cost of some speed.
His personality is defined by a sharp and famous contradiction. On one hand, he possesses profound wisdom and a deep understanding of true martial arts. On the other, he is notoriously lecherous, frequently scheming to catch a glimpse of attractive women or asking for inappropriate favors. While he never uses force to harm women, his antics almost always result in him receiving a violent reprisal from his female acquaintances, such as Bulma or Chi-Chi. However, beneath this comedic facade lies a starkly different core when martial principles are at stake. He is a selfless and courageous warrior who has repeatedly shown a willingness to sacrifice his life to protect the Earth.
Motivationally, Kame sen’nin’s primary drive is the cultivation of the next generation. His training philosophy is holistic, emphasizing that diligence in action, study, pleasure, taste, and rest are all vital components of growth. He believes that martial arts must be used for good and that character development is far more important than mere combat ability. In Dragon Ball Super, his motivation evolves from simply watching from the sidelines to proving that traditional martial arts and experience still hold value. He seeks to overcome his own worldly desires and push past his limits, not to become the strongest, but to pass on the lesson that there is always room for improvement, regardless of age.
Regarding key relationships, Kame sen’nin is the revered founder of the Turtle School. His most significant relationships are with his students, including Son Gohan (the adoptive grandfather of Goku), the Ox-King, Yamcha, Krillin, and most notably, Son Goku. He views Goku and Krillin not just as students but as the ultimate proof of his teachings, and he takes immense pride in their growth. He also has an older sister, Uranai Baba, the fortune teller, who is over 180 years younger than him due to his longevity. He lives in the company of Umigame, a talking sea turtle, and has a friendly rivalry with Tsuru sen’nin, the master of the Crane School.
In the narrative of Dragon Ball Super, Kame sen’nin plays a more active combat role than in previous sequel series. During the Resurrection F arc, he returns to the battlefield to fight against the army of the revived Frieza, demonstrating he has kept himself in fighting shape. His most significant contribution comes during the Universe Survival arc and the Tournament of Power. Here, he is selected as a member of Team Universe 7. In this tournament, he showcases his experience by eliminating multiple opponents from Universe 4, including the warrior Ganos, whom he defeats with a fully charged Shin Kamehameha. During this battle, he experiences a heart attack from the strain, only to be revived by a tearful Goku, proving the deep bond between them.
Kame sen’nin undergoes notable development in this series. While still retaining his perverted traits, he demonstrates an ability to control his libido for the sake of battle, as shown when he faces the seductive warrior Caway and states that his worldly desires have already been sealed. He evolves from a relic of a past era into a living symbol of the Turtle School’s eternal philosophy. In a crucial moment, he gives his students a speech to live life to the fullest: move well, study well, play well, eat well, and rest well.
In terms of abilities, Kame sen’nin is a highly versatile and technical fighter. He is the inventor of the iconic Kamehameha Wave, an energy attack that concentrates ki into a powerful blast. This technique takes fifty years for him to develop. His repertoire also includes the Evil Containment Wave (Mafuba), a dangerous sealing technique that can trap even godly beings if aimed correctly, as well as the Thunder Shock Surprise (Bankoku Bikkuri Shō), which shocks and paralyzes the opponent. He possesses various unique techniques such as the Drunken Fist and the Hypnosis of the Sleeping Child. Kame sen’nin is also capable of using his Full Power state, a transformation that massively increases his muscle mass and ki output to devastating levels. Most impressively, his centuries of experience allow him to access a rudimentary form of Ultra Instinct, a divine technique where the body moves and reacts automatically without conscious thought. He was able to touch upon this state during the Tournament of Power, allowing him to dodge attacks from the incredibly powerful Jiren for a short time.
