TV-Series
Description
Bulma's mother is the wife of the brilliant scientist Dr. Brief and the mother of Bulma and her older sister, Tights. She resides with her family at the Capsule Corporation compound in West City. Although creator Akira Toriyama did not give her a name in the original manga, he has stated that if he had, she would have been called Panchy, a name that continues the family tradition of being derived from undergarments. She is a human with no known combat abilities or scientific expertise.
Her personality is defined by a cheerful, carefree, and somewhat airy disposition. She is almost always seen with a gentle smile and maintains a go-at-your-own-pace attitude, seemingly unflappable even in the face of world-threatening danger. This was demonstrated when the evil Piccolo Daimao threatened to destroy West City; rather than flee, her primary concern was searching for her lost cat, Tama. Similarly, during the threat of Majin Buu, she and her husband refused to evacuate to a safe location, nonchalantly stating that they could be brought back to life with the Dragon Balls if necessary. This lack of urgency often leads her to be oblivious to the gravity of the situations unfolding around her. For instance, she failed to realize that the older Trunks who appeared was from the future.
Her primary motivation appears to be a simple desire to be helpful and to care for her family in her own way. An official character guide describes her as someone who, no matter how serious the situation, only thinks about making cakes and being useful. She is a dedicated homemaker and is often seen wearing an apron while tending to domestic duties.
In the story, Bulma's mother serves as a minor but recurring background character, primarily appearing in scenes set at Capsule Corporation. Her role is often to provide lighthearted moments and a stark contrast to the high-stakes battles of the series. She is shown to be very proud of her daughter's accomplishments and is fond of Goku, having known him since he was a boy. When a grown Goku returned to West City to have his spaceship repaired for the journey to Planet Namek, she was overjoyed to see him and even invited him to go out for drinks after he defeated the Saiyans. She also has a tendency to embarrass her daughter by cheerfully sharing personal stories, such as Bulma's fights with her former boyfriend Yamcha, with guests like Goku.
Her key relationships are centered on her immediate family. She is a loving and supportive wife to Dr. Brief, and their shared, easygoing nature makes them a compatible pair. Her relationship with her daughter, Bulma, is affectionate, though she often teases her or acts in a way that leaves Bulma exasperated. She also has a notable fondness for Goku, whom she treats almost like a second son. As a grandmother, she is shown to be available to babysit her grandchildren, Trunks and Bulla, whenever Bulma requires it.
The character does not undergo any significant development or change throughout Dragon Ball Super or the preceding series. Her appearance and personality remain remarkably consistent over the years, seemingly unaffected by the passage of time. She has no notable abilities related to fighting, ki manipulation, or technology, with her defining traits being her cheerful disposition and her unwavering dedication to her simple, domestic life.
