Description
Mr. Popo is a genie-like being who serves as the assistant to Earth's guardian deity and the caretaker of the Lookout, a floating palace high above the sky. His background establishes him as an ancient, immortal figure who has existed since before the Nameless Namekian arrived on Earth, having served successive generations of gods as their devoted attendant. In Dragon Ball Super, his identity as a member of a demonic race is hinted at through physical features such as pointed ears and horns, suggesting a possible origin connected to the Demon Realm.
Personality wise, Mr. Popo is calm, composed, helpful, and patient. He maintains a serene demeanor even in combat, teaching that one must remain calm to control ki. He is loyal, wise, and humble, devoting himself entirely to his duties as guardian of the Lookout and assistant to the Earth's god. His primary motivation is to support and protect the Earth's guardian and the Lookout, as well as to train worthy warriors when threats emerge. He shows great dedication to his responsibilities, whether tending to the ancient butterfly garden he cultivated thousands of years ago or rebuilding the dragon Shenron if its physical form is destroyed.
In the story, Mr. Popo's role across the Dragon Ball series is that of a constant, dependable presence at the Lookout. In Dragon Ball, he is far stronger than Son Goku when Goku first arrives, and he trains Goku for three years, teaching him techniques such as the Chou Kamehameha and the concept of Mind Like Still Water. In Dragon Ball Z, he helps Bulma, Krillin, and Gohan by revealing the location of Kami's old starship to journey to Planet Namek, and later serves Dende as his attendant when Dende becomes Earth's new guardian. In Dragon Ball Super, Mr. Popo continues to attend to Dende at the Lookout, though his overall appearances are limited. His role remains that of the faithful caretaker and occasional mentor.
Key relationships include his long service to Kami, his friendship with Dende whom he serves with the same loyalty, and his role as a mentor to Goku and other Z fighters. He also has a close bond with the Earth's guardians, feeling despair when Kami dies. He has trained warriors such as Goku, Krillin, and even Vegeta to prepare them for planetary threats. He is also responsible for crafting the physical appearance of the wish-granting dragon Shenron, having modeled a figurine that became its design.
Development of Mr. Popo's character is largely static, but his mysterious origins are expanded in Dragon Ball Super, where his demonic race connection is hinted at. He remains a constant, immortal presence, unchanged by the events around him.
Notable abilities include superhuman martial arts skill, flight and levitation using ki, the ability to teleport instantly without requiring an energy signature to home in on, magical object creation such as a flying carpet, and the capacity to intercept telepathy. He is effectively immortal, does not age, and has demonstrated great durability, blocking and dodging hits from Super Saiyan Goten and Trunks without being fazed. He also possesses a power level of 1030 during the Saiyan Saga, far surpassing King Piccolo at that time.
