Description
Pansy is a young girl who lives in a small village in the Land of Gurumes, a kingdom ruled by King Gurumes. In the Japanese version, the kingdom is called Gourmeth and the stones at the center of the conflict are referred to as Rich Stones. After the discovery of these Blood Rubies, the king is transformed into a greedy and monstrous tyrant, and his soldiers tear apart the countryside to mine the stones and gather the Dragon Balls. Pansy first resists the soldiers by firing a slingshot at one of them while they destroy the village flower fields. When a soldier moves to punish her, her father steps in to defend her and is brutally beaten by the king's enforcer Bongo. After witnessing her father's suffering and the destruction of her home, Pansy sets out alone on a journey to find a warrior strong enough to help her people.
Pansy is outspoken and unwilling to accept injustice quietly, as shown by her decision to confront armed soldiers even though she has no combat training. She is also polite and earnest; when she encounters Bulma and the others, she apologizes for any trouble and pleads for help rather than demanding it. Her central motivation is to restore peace and beauty to her land. She explains that the king has ruined the mountains, lakes, fields, and homes of the region, and that no one can stand against his army. Because she cannot fight herself, she seeks help elsewhere, first approaching Master Roshi the Turtle Hermit. Roshi declines to join her but recommends Goku and assures her that the friends she has gathered will be enough.
In the story, Pansy serves as the character whose wish resolves the conflict. After traveling with Goku, Bulma, Oolong, and later Yamcha, the group reaches the king's palace. When the dragon Shenron is summoned, Pansy wishes for her land to be peaceful and beautiful again. The wish removes all the Blood Rubies, restores the fertility of the land, and ends the king's curse. Her journey comes full circle: she began as a village child seeking outside help and ends as the person who saves her home, with Master Roshi's earlier encouragement proving true.
Her key relationships shape her journey. Goku protects her early on when the shapeshifter Oolong frightens her, and she later travels with him and Bulma, who offers her friendship and reassurance after Roshi declines to join them. Her parents appear at the start of the film; her father's injury in her defense is what pushes her to leave, and her mother tries to restrain her during her initial confrontation with the soldiers. Master Roshi acts as a mentor figure who redirects her toward Goku rather than joining her himself.
Pansy has no notable supernatural abilities and does not take part in combat. Her main tools are a slingshot, which she uses against Oolong and the king's soldiers, and her own determination. In some versions of the film, she is also known as Penny or Panji. She also appears as a supporting character in the Dragon Ball Z Summer Vacation Special, though her primary role is in Curse of the Blood Rubies.
