Description
Iamko is a significant character in the first Dragon Ball movie, Curse of the Blood Rubies, where he is introduced as a young man with a complex past and a crucial role in the adventure. Known originally as Yamcha, his background as a bandit is central to his introduction. He roams the wastelands and desert regions as a feared outlaw, often accompanied by his small, shapeshifting companion, Pual. Living a solitary life of thievery, he targets travelers who pass through his territory, surviving by stealing their belongings and capsules.

His personality at the outset is defined by arrogance and a fierce, intimidating demeanor, which serves as a tool for his bandit lifestyle. He presents himself as a ruthless desert bandit with little regard for others. However, this harsh exterior masks a significant internal vulnerability. Iamko suffers from an extreme and paralyzing fear of women, known as gynophobia. In the presence of a girl, especially someone as bold and forward as Bulma, he becomes completely flustered, nervous, and unable to act or speak coherently, often freezing up entirely. This phobia is a direct contrast to his tough-guy persona and is a primary source of the comedic moments involving his character. As the story progresses, his personality begins to shift; while his fear of women persists, he shows a capacity for loyalty and courage in battle, moving from a simple antagonist to a valuable, if reluctant, ally.

His main motivation in the film is tied directly to his personal weakness. He desires the Dragon Balls not for power or conquest, but to wish away his debilitating fear of girls. He believes that by making a wish to Shenron, he can overcome this phobia and live a normal life, which he sees as a prerequisite for eventually getting married. This wish drives him to follow Goku and Bulma across the wilderness, hoping to steal their collected Dragon Balls for himself.

In the story of Curse of the Blood Rubies, Iamko acts initially as an antagonist. He first confronts Goku, Bulma, and Oolong in the desert, intending to rob them. However, his attack fails when Bulma appears, triggering his phobia and forcing him to retreat. After this encounter, he and Pual secretly trail the group, waiting for an opportunity to seize their Dragon Balls. His role evolves from a solitary thief to a member of the team against the common enemy, King Gurumes. When the situation escalates beyond a simple treasure hunt, Iamko chooses to fight alongside Goku and the others, demonstrating that beneath his bandit exterior is a sense of honor and a willingness to face a greater threat.

His key relationships are primarily defined by his interactions with the main group. His relationship with Pual is the most important; Pual is not just a pet but a loyal and indispensable partner who assists him in his schemes and is his only true companion in the desert. With Bulma, his dynamic is one of comedic tension. She is the direct trigger for his phobia, making their interactions awkward and often leading to his retreat. Despite this, his desire to overcome this fear for her sake (and others) is a key driver. With Goku, Iamko shares a rivalry that is forged through combat and mutual respect. Goku is not intimidated by Iamko's reputation and proves to be a formidable opponent in their initial scuffle, an encounter that lays the groundwork for their later friendship.

In terms of development, the movie shows the beginning of Iamko's transition from a self-serving bandit to a heroic figure. He starts as a straightforward adversary but is forced into cooperation when the threat of King Gurumes becomes clear. He learns to work alongside strangers and risks his safety for a cause beyond his own personal wish, marking the first step away from his criminal past and toward becoming a reliable fighter and friend.

Iamko's notable abilities include his exceptional martial arts skills, which he has honed through survival in the harsh desert environment. He is fast, agile, and a formidable hand-to-hand combatant, capable of holding his own against Goku, who is already a superhumanly strong fighter. His signature technique is the Wolf Fang Fist, a rushing flurry of powerful, claw-like strikes and kicks designed to overwhelm an opponent. This technique highlights his feral, wolf-like fighting style, befitting his reputation as a desert bandit. He also wields a sword on occasion, though his primary strength lies in his unarmed combat prowess.
