Description
Gemma Himuro serves as the primary antagonist of the story and is the formidable leader of the Devils of Kimon, a group of eight supernatural warriors. His history with the protagonist, Jubei Kibagami, is long and deeply antagonistic. Years before the main events, Gemma served a clan and betrayed Jubei by tricking his comrades into fighting each other, leading to their deaths. When Jubei confronted him for this treachery, he succeeded in decapitating Gemma, seemingly killing him. However, Gemma possessed a mysterious ability that allowed him to return from death, an event that marked the beginning of his quest for greater power.
In terms of personality, Gemma is the epitome of a cold and calculating master strategist. He operates almost entirely from the shadows, displaying an eerie and unsettling calmness even when his plans are disrupted or his subordinates are killed. His immortality has stripped him of any fear of death, making him fearless and incredibly arrogant when confronting enemies. He is utterly disloyal and views everyone as a tool to be used and discarded, showing no remorse when betraying allies or employers, including the powerful Shogun of the Dark. Another notable facet of his character is his hedonism; he is consumed by an addiction to sex and takes lovers from both sexes within his own clan, who often compete fiercely for his favor. He is also a master of deception, even using shapeshifting abilities to seduce new victims or impersonate others.
Gemma's primary motivation is pure, unchecked ambition. While he initially appears to be a loyal vassal to the Toyotomi family, archenemies of the ruling Tokugawa Shogunate, this is merely a facade. His true goal is to seize a massive shipment of gold for himself. With this fortune, he plans to raise a vast private army of ninja, intending to conquer Japan and rule the nation from the shadows as its unseen master.
In the story, Gemma plays the role of the hidden puppet master. To advance his scheme, he assassinates Hyobu Sakaki, the high-ranking Chamberlain of the Mochizuki clan, and assumes his identity to prevent any interference with the gold shipment. He only reveals his true form after his plan is set in motion, culminating in a final confrontation with Jubei. A key moment in his role is when he callously murders the female ninja Kagero by stabbing her in the back, an act that fuels Jubei's final resolve.
Regarding key relationships, Gemma’s most significant connection is his rivalry with Jubei Kibagami. He is Jubei's arch-nemesis, a figure from his past who represents both a personal betrayal and the ultimate challenge. Within his own group, he maintains a relationship of dominance and manipulation. He is noted to have intimate relationships with his subordinates, including Benisato and Yurimaru, but these are based on power and desire rather than any genuine affection.
Gemma also undergoes a notable development through his confrontation with Jubei. While he does not experience a moral redemption, his immortality and arrogance are ultimately his undoing. In their final battle within a burning ship, Jubei inflicts horrific wounds on him, caving in his skull and cleaving his body in two, yet Gemma's regeneration power allows him to continuously heal and keep fighting. His defeat comes from an unexpected source: the very gold he desired so much. The heat from the fire melts the gold bars, and a wave of liquid metal washes over him, coating his entire body. Even this does not kill him, but it renders him inanimate as the gold cools and hardens around him, trapping him alive as the ship sinks to the bottom of the sea.
Gemma's most notable ability is his terrifying power of reincarnation or regeneration. Any fatal wound he receives, including severed limbs or decapitation, rapidly heals. He can reattach lost body parts and recover from any physical trauma, making him virtually impossible to kill through conventional means. Beyond this, he is also a master of ninjutsu with incredible speed, agility, and shapeshifting skills, making him a lethal combatant even before his immortality is considered.
