Description
Mushizō is one of the Eight Devils of Kimon, a group of supernaturally gifted ninja serving the Yamashiro clan in the 1993 film Ninja Scroll. His appearance is distinctly malformed: he has a hunched back, thin stringy hair, and a bestial face, and he wears a fur vest and trousers. The most notable feature of his physique is the immense paper wasp nest that grows out of his back, making him a living hive.

His background is not elaborated upon beyond his membership in the Eight Devils, but his role within the group is that of a lethal, insect-controlling assassin. Mushizō is highly intelligent in his own grotesque way, communicating with and commanding the hornets that inhabit his nest. He is bloodthirsty, viewing his opponents as prey and killing without remorse. Despite his repellent exterior, he possesses a sharp tactical mind, using his wasps not only as direct weapons but also as scouts for reconnaissance.

Mushizō’s primary motivation is serving the mission of the Eight Devils: protecting the secret gold shipment and eliminating anyone who threatens the conspiracy. He shows no personal ambitions beyond carrying out orders, though he derives evident pleasure from the hunt and the kill. His loyalty to the group is absolute, and he does not hesitate to engage the film’s protagonist, Kibagami Jubei, directly.

In the story, Mushizō appears during the investigation of the plague-stricken village of Shimoda. He ambushes Jubei and Kagero alongside two other Devils, Zakuro and Utsutsu Mujuro. His confrontation with Jubei takes place in a water mill. During the fight, Mushizo demonstrates his abilities: he unleashes swarms of hornets to attack and confuse his enemy, and he uses a forked yari as his primary weapon. A concealed long needle lodged in his throat can be spat out as a surprise projectile. His hunched posture belies a surprising speed and agility. However, his dependence on the hive also creates a vulnerability; immersion in water or exposure to smoke and gas can drive the wasps into a frenzy, causing them to turn on him.

The battle with Jubei is notable for revealing crucial information. When Jubei asks if Himuro Gemma is still alive, Mushizo taunts him by confirming that Gemma, whom Jubei had previously decapitated, has the ability to regenerate. This revelation deepens the central conflict. Jubei ultimately kills Mushizo by slashing open the nest and then decapitating him.

Mushizo’s key relationship is with his fellow Devils, particularly his leader Gemma. He shows no meaningful personal connection to other characters, treating even his allies as tools for the mission. He has no character development or arc; he serves as an early antagonist who showcases the supernatural nature of the Eight Devils and provides a critical piece of plot exposition. After his death, he does not appear again.

His notable abilities revolve around his control over hornets and wasps, which he can command telepathically and use for both offense and reconnaissance. He is a walking hive, and the nest on his back provides some protection against attacks from behind. Additionally, he is skilled with a forked yari, proficient in throwing bo shuriken, and possesses the hidden throat needle for close-quarters surprise strikes. His combat tactics emphasize overwhelming his foe with insect swarms while pressing the attack with his spear.
