Description
Hikari Horaki is the class representative for Class 2-A at the school in Tokyo-3, the same class attended by Shinji Ikari and the other Evangelion pilots. She is thirteen years old and is easily recognized by her brown hair, typically styled into two pigtails, and a small scattering of freckles across her face. Her name, along with those of her unseen elder sister Kodama and younger sister Nozomi, is a reference to the different services of the Tokaido Shinkansen line.

Hikari takes her duties as class representative with the utmost seriousness, presenting a demeanor that is often seen as rigid, aggressive, and by-the-book. She is quick to enforce rules and maintain order in the classroom, which can make her appear bossy or overly strict to her peers. However, this stern exterior conceals a much warmer and more traditionally feminine personality. She is an accomplished cook and manages much of the household chores for her family, which consists of her two sisters, as there is no mention of her mother, and it is implied she may be deceased. Hikari herself expresses surprise that her skill in cooking might be unexpected, suggesting she is aware that others may see this domestic talent as at odds with her public persona as a strict enforcer of rules.

One of the most significant aspects of Hikari's character is her close friendship with Asuka Langley Soryu. In a series where many characters struggle with personal connections, Hikari becomes Asuka's only real friend and confidante. She is one of the few people who can see past Asuka's abrasive and arrogant behavior, offering her genuine kindness and understanding. This friendship is put to the test when Asuka suffers a severe mental breakdown; during this time, she seeks out Hikari and stays at her home, revealing her deep-seated insecurities. Hikari listens to her friend's hateful words with sadness, yet provides a non-judgmental space, telling Asuka she has done her best.

While Hikari frequently bickers with her classmate Toji Suzuhara, this antagonism masks a deep and unexpressed romantic affection for him. She confides her crush to Asuka, admitting she is unable to openly confess her feelings. Her way of showing care is practical, such as offering to make him homemade lunches after noticing he only eats fast food and snacks. The series shows her as a caring individual who is also perceptive about the feelings of those around her, particularly Asuka's hidden affection for Shinji, whom she encourages to be more mindful. In the original television series, her role is to provide a glimpse of a relatively normal, grounded life amidst the psychological turmoil of the main pilots. Her story concludes with her being evacuated from Tokyo-3 along with the rest of her family, and she is later implied to have taken in Misato's pet penguin, Pen Pen, for safekeeping. Like all of her classmates, Hikari is an unknowing candidate to become an Evangelion pilot, though she never does so in the main narrative.
