Description
Gendo Ikari, originally born Gendo Rokubungi, is the supreme commander of the special agency Nerv, an organization dedicated to the study and annihilation of mysterious alien beings known as Angels. His past is largely shrouded in mystery, with few details given about his childhood or parents. In 1999, after being arrested, he was bailed out by Professor Kozo Fuyutsuki, a university lecturer. He subsequently began a romantic relationship with Yui Ikari, a brilliant researcher and student of Fuyutsuki, whom he later married, taking her surname. Through Yui, Gendo became connected to a secretive and powerful organization known as Seele. He participated in the Katsuragi expedition to Antarctica but left just before the catastrophic Second Impact, a global disaster that reshaped the planet. Following the death of his wife in a mysterious accident during an Evangelion activation experiment, Gendo became cold and emotionally closed off, eventually abandoning his young son, Shinji Ikari, to be raised by a guardian.
Driven by a deep, hidden grief, Gendo's primary motivation is to be reunited with his lost wife, Yui. To this end, he secretly works to subvert and co-opt Seele's ultimate goal, the Human Instrumentality Project, a plan to forcibly evolve humanity and erase all individual barriers. He is a pragmatic, calculating, and manipulative individual who views other people as tools to be used and discarded for the sake of his personal objective. Despite his position as the commander of Nerv, he is locked in a complex game of subterfuge, pretending to follow Seele's orders while secretly orchestrating his own version of the Third Impact. His personality is marked by a complete inability to meaningfully connect with his son, Shinji, believing that his presence only brings pain and that Shinji is better off without him. In this way, he and his son are more alike than either might care to admit, both having a deep-seated fear of emotional pain that leads them to "run away" from close relationships.
In the story, Gendo's role is that of the primary human antagonist and master manipulator, the head of Nerv who pulls the strings from behind the scenes. He is directly responsible for summoning his son Shinji to the city of Tokyo-3 to pilot Evangelion Unit-01, treating him with a cold and pragmatic distance. His key relationships are defined by his singular obsession with Yui. He maintains a manipulative working relationship with his subordinate, Kozo Fuyutsuki, who is aware of his true history and goals. He also has intimate but ultimately exploitative relationships with brilliant scientists Naoko Akagi and her daughter, Ritsuko Akagi, using them for their expertise and then discarding them once they are no longer useful. His ward, Rei Ayanami, a mysterious girl created from the genetic material of his deceased wife, is perhaps his most important tool. While he shows moments of what appears to be paternal concern for her safety, his ultimate interest in her is as a vessel for his Instrumentality plan.
Gendo's character undergoes a specific form of development, though not one of redemption. His cold exterior is eventually revealed to be a brittle shell built over a core of profound trauma and loneliness. In the climactic moments of the series, his plan is foiled when Rei rejects him and instead chooses to merge with Lilith, the second Angel. During the resulting Instrumentality, Gendo is confronted by the spirit of his wife and is then devoured by a projection of Evangelion Unit-01, which contains Yui's soul. In his final moments, he expresses a long-suppressed regret and apologizes to his son, revealing the true, failed motivation behind all of his cruel actions.
As a commander, Gendo is depicted as a brilliant strategist and political operator, able to navigate the dangerous politics of the United Nations and the shadowy Seele organization. One of his most notable physical abilities stems from his secret plan: he implants the embryonic first Angel, Adam, into the palm of his own right hand, which he typically keeps covered with a glove. This act physically embodies his intention to forcibly unite Adam with Lilith (through Rei) and become a god-like figure who can control Instrumentality.
