Description
Jessie Gartland is an American athlete from Earth who becomes a central rival and later an ally in the athletic competitions leading to the Cosmo Beauty selection. Her birthdate is July 10. She hails from a ghetto in Detroit, where she endured a difficult childhood marked by extreme poverty and loss. Orphaned at a young age, she was forced to steal food to survive and care for her younger sister. This period of her life was defined by constant flight, as she had to run from those she stole from, a survival skill that would later form the foundation of her athletic ability.

A turning point came with the death of her younger sister from an incurable disease, a traumatic event that left her alone. Following this loss, a black priest from a local church took her in and recognized her natural talent for running. He nurtured this gift, providing the first structured guidance in her life. Her path toward competitive athletics was solidified after she witnessed the legendary athlete Tomoe Midou running. This encounter was transformative, giving Jessie a clear goal and an idol to emulate. Driven by a desire to honor this inspiration and escape her past, she dedicated herself wholly to becoming the Cosmo Beauty.

Jessie's personality is complex, shaped by her harsh upbringing and fierce ambition. On the surface, she is the most talented and seemingly invincible athlete from the terrestrial nations, consistently dominating tests and competitions. She carries herself with a confident, sometimes stern, demeanor and is known for being a "Broken Ace," a supremely talented individual whose past continues to wound her deeply. Her relationship with others is generally harmonious, but she holds one notable exception in the form of Akari Kanzaki. Jessie views Akari with resentment and contempt, perceiving her as weak, whiny, and unworthy of being the daughter of Tomoe Midou, the woman Jessie idolizes. This resentment is fueled by her own belief that she has earned her place through immense struggle, while Akari seems to inherit a legacy without the same drive or apparent talent. She can be cruel in her dismissal of Akari, challenging her to races to prove her point and crush her spirit. Conversely, she feels a more innate and sporty rivalry with Ayla Roznovsky.

Her central role in the story is that of a formidable rival and a catalyst for Akari's growth. As a top contender, she represents the seemingly insurmountable wall of talent and hardened will that Akari must overcome. However, Jessie also undergoes a significant personal journey that deepens her role beyond that of a simple antagonist. After experiencing a shocking defeat that mirrors the kind of despair she often projected onto Akari, she falls into a state of deep frustration. She returns to her hometown only to find the priest who saved her now blind, a consequence of supporting the orphanage through gambling. This event forces her to confront her failures and reprioritize her life.

Her key relationships are primarily with Akari, the priest Father Bobson Howard, and her idol Tomoe Midou. Her animosity toward Akari is rooted in a painful mix of jealousy and a misguided sense of protection for her idol's legacy. However, this relationship evolves. Later, it is Akari who seeks her out and encourages her to re-enter the world of competitive athletics, leading to a reconciliation where they become genuine rivals who push each other forward. Her relationship with the priest is one of deep gratitude and obligation; she returns to him in his time of need, taking over his role of supporting the orphanage through her athletic earnings, acknowledging the debt she owes him.

Jessie's development is a journey from a hardened, bitter survivor to a more mature and self-aware athlete. Her initial motivation is purely to win for the sake of overcoming her past and honoring Tomoe Midou. The crushing defeat she suffers acts as a necessary fall, stripping away her arrogance and forcing her to find a new, more grounded reason to compete. By the end, she is no longer driven solely by resentment but by a sense of responsibility and a true love for the sport itself, becoming a respected peer to her former rival. Her notable abilities are centered on her incredible running speed, honed from a lifetime of fleeing danger. She possesses peak physical conditioning and is shown to have exceptional talent across various athletic disciplines, making her a dominant force in the qualifying rounds of the competition.
