Description
Lepka is the head of administration for Industria, the industrialized island nation that rose from the remnants of a devastated world. Though he technically answers to the Industria High Committee, a council of elderly and largely passive scientists, Lepka gradually consolidates power and stages a coup, transforming himself into the sole dictator of Industria and the primary antagonist of the story. He is driven by an unrelenting ambition to revive the ancient solar energy technology developed by Dr. Lao, not to restore civilization but to power a massive flying fortress called the Gigant, which he intends to use to conquer whatever remains of the world. His personality is marked by ruthlessness, cunning, and a complete disregard for human life or the natural environment. He is calculating and manipulative, using fear and military force to maintain control over Industria’s population. Unlike several other antagonistic figures in the series who eventually undergo redemption, Lepka remains irredeemably evil throughout, escalating in desperation and cruelty as his plans begin to fail. In his pursuit of power, Lepka views both Lana and her grandfather Dr. Lao not as people but as tools to unlock the secret of solar energy. He maintains a tense and ultimately betraying relationship with Monsley, his chief military officer, discarding her once she no longer serves his purposes. His interactions with Conan are defined by conflict, as Conan’s physical strength, resilience, and moral clarity repeatedly thwart Lepka’s schemes. Lepka’s development is a downward spiral: from a calculating administrator to an increasingly unstable tyrant who, in his final gambit, attempts to escape on the Gigant and rule from the sky, only to meet his defeat. He possesses no supernatural abilities; his power comes from his political position, his strategic mind, his control over Industria’s military and technology, and his willingness to exploit the ignorance and fear of those around him.
